Thread: NPCs can YASD too!

    Default NPCs can YASD too!

I just had a black wizard summon ice vortices gainst me. Nice idea Mr. black wizard, but given that I'm wearing the ring of immunity and the ancient mummy wrapping, I really don't find them all that threatening. They still exploded, though, and while they didn't do any damage to me, the black wizard wasn't so lucky. YASD!

Haha, that's hilarious! Do Black Wizards just summon totally random foes? Man, that makes me wish we had a spell to summon friendly-but-temporary allies, like elementals or some such. AFAIK there are only two kinds of companions - a Necromancer's undead, and a Druid's/Bard's animals. There should be a Conjurer/Spellsword class... Ok I'll stop dreaming now.

The spectrum is much greater. You can read a scroll of familiar summoning to generate a companion of matching danger level (or higher/lower depending on B/U/C status; reading these in DH is nearly guaranteed to give something awesome), get a random monster by wishing for "friends", 'u'se a blessed figurine of wondrous power, give a wedding ring to a berserker. The HMV can yield Hawkslayer and/or a flesh golem. 'u'sing the Air orb generates a tame air elemental, and I think there was an elementalist class power to summon some random tame ones.

PS: I wonder if black wizards are also susceptible to being ripped to shreds by their "friends" after stepping on a fireball trap

I had black wizards summon lightning lizards and subsequently get electrocuted by bouncing bolts.

Hmm... I didn't realize the scroll depended on the DL! That's really cool. If I ever find another scroll, I will definitely try that. The other options are not so appealing, however. I knew about Hawkslayer/etc. but I consider those more 'companions' than 'summons'. I was thinking more along the lines of a temporary ally. Example: you summon a weak fire sprite to help you fight things, but after, say, 100~ turns it explodes. Temporary summonable allies. That would be cool

Frankly, keeping companions alive and having to wait for them to get them to stairs all the time is annoying. Makes the game feel like one of those annoying escort missions. It's like trying to save the Puppy, except forever.

It would be great if NPCs would react to dying at the hand of their own summons (and similar stupid deaths), "The black wizard had an absolutely priceless expression on his face upon his death."

You hit Andor Drakon, the ElDeR cHaOs GoD, and severely wound him.
The greater balor summons some help!
The ratling duelist disarms you. You drop your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster (+36, 6d12+18) [+12, +12]. It flies to the west.
Andor Drakon, the ElDeR cHaOs GoD, picks up the blessed Trident of the Red Rooster (+36, 6d12+18) [+12, +12].
Andor Drakon, the ElDeR cHaOs GoD, wields the blessed Trident of the Red Rooster (+36, 6d12+18) [+12, +12].
