    Question Some miscellaneous questions..

    1. Is there a reliable way to cross water as a troll? It seems that trolls don't really do water.
    2. Is stairhopping the only rapid way to quickly find specific needed items?
    3. Do male and female PCs have different stats? If so, how?
    4. Is there a way to find out what gods want to disintegrate me before I sacrifice them all of my rocks?
    5. Is the cute dog useful for anything but amusing signatures?
    6. What's the deal with mimics? Every time I get a good character going one über-paralyzes me to death.
    7. Is stealth ever useful? I've never successfully sneaked up on something, unless I spawn nearly on top of it.
    8. How does spell knowledge work?
    9. What determines if a book I read will blow up in my face, concentration, learning, or literacy?
    10. Can I ever get Dodge if I don't start with it? It seems like a major skill to be missing.
    11. If I already have healing, is there any downside to sacrificing both Yrriggs and Jharod to old Yaprak?
    12. Does completing quests give XP directly, or is the only reward in the form of items/more quests/candy?

That's all I have for now, I think. Thanks for replying!

You can learn the swimming skill by giving the baby water dragon some carrot juice (2 uncursed or 1 blessed). Some classes also start with the swimming skill.

    2. Is stairhopping the only rapid way to quickly find specific needed items?
No. Stairhopping is rather inefficient, in fact. Fighting monsters work well.

    3. Do male and female PCs have different stats? If so, how?
Males have slightly more St and females have slightly more Dx (I think?). More importantly, females tend to get better deals at shops since their Ap score counts against shop prices. Generally, you should always play female, IMHO.

    4. Is there a way to find out what gods want to disintegrate me before I sacrifice them all of my rocks?
It's based on the alignment of your PC. If you are neutral, the neutral god (gray altar) will normally be friendly to you unless you've done some bad things. If you've been switching alignments a lot, you should assume that all of the gods are pissed at you.

    5. Is the cute dog useful for anything but amusing signatures?
    No.

    6. What's the deal with mimics? Every time I get a good character going one über-paralyzes me to death.
That's what they do. If you have >10 PV or so, usually you can survive a mimic fight unless you are cursed or doomed. Greater/master mimics obviously are much more dangerous still...

    7. Is stealth ever useful? I've never successfully sneaked up on something, unless I spawn nearly on top of it.
It's more useful in the newer versions. If nothing else, it greatly helps evade wilderness encounters. There's also a particular (optional) high level quest that requires you to be very stealthy indeed...

    8. How does spell knowledge work?
It's complicated. Short answer is you read a book and get some number of castings. That number is in some way proportional to how many times you can cast the spell before you run out. I don't know exactly how--I think it depends on PP. When you get below 100 castings, the PP cost starts to increase dramatically. Over 1000 castings is usually enough to last most of a game with fairly heavy usage.

    9. What determines if a book I read will blow up in my face, concentration, learning, or literacy?
IIRC, concentration is most important in determining if the book will blow up in your face. But with low learning/literacy, you won't succeed at reading it. Race and class also play a factor, as does experience level.

    10. Can I ever get Dodge if I don't start with it? It seems like a major skill to be missing.
Only by using a wish or getting lucky with a potion/scroll of education. Dodge is actually not that good, so don't worry about it too much.

    11. If I already have healing, is there any downside to sacrificing both Yrriggs and Jharod to old Yaprak?
If you have healing, you are better off talking to the druid in the centre of town instead of the village elder. He will give you a different quest with different rewards. This quest is mutually exclusive with the carpenter quest.

    12. Does completing quests give XP directly, or is the only reward in the form of items/more quests/candy?
Completing quests does not give XP.

    1. Try a class that starts with Swimming. Alternatively, there is an NPC that might teach you how to swim (think about it) if you endear yourself to him with gifts of a particular kind. Perhaps something tasty, refreshing and appropriate to his age.
    2. It works, but it's amazingly boring if you ask me, and has already been done away with as a game mechanic in the closed prereleases, so you will have to do without it in the final release of 1.2.0. If I really cannot progress in my game because I need a particular item, and I've exhausted all other possibilities, I'll crawl the appropriate levels of the ID and make sure I clear every tension room.
    3. I believe there are some small differences but I don't know. Somebody more experienced or better spoiled will be able to answer this one. I did learn recently that when buying from shops, shopkeepers like attractive females and charming men.
    4. Ideally, you want to be the same alignment as the altar before you sacrifice. If you have a holy symbol, you can 'u'se it to pray and check if your current god (the one corresponding to your present alignment) is happy or not. If your current god is angry, sacrifice to him at his altar and that will eventually gain his favors. If you suspect he might be angry enough to pulverize your equipment, maybe you need to make sure you are only wearing things you don't mind gone when you try to sacrifice.
    5. The cute dog is great for style points and for being a true hero. Otherwise the dungeon the dog is in is useful for items and experience. I always crawl it for that reason. There's a guaranteed vault in it and I love vaults.
    6. Yes, they paralyze. Some items grant resistance to this. Otherwise, try to fight them in a way that they can't hit you back. You don't have to fight fair; they don't. If you can't do this, you can always run away.
    7. Try training the skill up to a high level and you will see that you are able to walk past many monsters unnoticed. Your ability to sneak up on them will also increase.
    8. When it runs out, you can't cast the spell anymore and need to read some more books.
    9. All of those things and also your mana and character level.
    10. Most skills can be gotten with a wish. Don't worry, there are other ways to get DV. Try a shield or a different weapon type.
    11. The only thing that will suffer is your rotten ungrateful heart, i.e. your alignment.
    12. Completing quests does not give XP as far as I know, but what you need to do in order to complete the quest will more often than not net you XP.

I also suggest checking the good old Adom FAQ. Good hunting!

Thanks for the help! I just read through the FAQ. Quite a few things I didn't know in there. I hadn't quite figured out what all the stats for a spell meant.

    > Is stairhopping the only rapid way to quickly find specific needed items?
If you're stuck because you need an item, usually you don't really need it in the first place. Many important items are guaranteed, too.

PS: If you want an ultra finish, you do need items that are hard to find. But in that case, it's still faster to dig graves, check the casino, drain pools and restock shops instead.

For learning spells, the most important factor is your class. For example if you're a mindcrafter, you might as well give up on the idea of ever learning magic. After that, it's learning, literacy and concentration that determine your chances to succeed at reading and how many castings you'll get.

Mimics very often turn up in the shops in the high mountain village and dwarftown. So be careful when entering those shops. Set your tactics to coward, equip your best armor or maybe shoot at the back of the shop to kill them before they're next to you.

The cute dog is good for one thing, it is a nice challenge. Plus it makes a little girl happy. But yes, there's no other reason to save it whatsoever.

You steal a scroll labelled HITME. The orc hits you.

Amulets of free action crop up fairly often and make you mostly safe from mimics - whenever approaching a somewhat suspiciously colorful piece of equipment or a new shop, it's good to check your backpack for carrying one

    1. How does rust affect equipment?
    2. How does a drakeling use acid spit?
    3. What affects the cap on skill increases, as well as the number of dice?

    1. rusty items seem to be exceptionally likely to be destroyed by fire. Rusty keys are likely to get destroyed when 'u'sed. Rusty armor decreases your Ap by 1 if worn. Rusty weapons deal half damage, and are rumored to cause blood poisoning to monsters sometimes. Rusty wands of (ball) lightning will shock you when zapped.
    2. press 'm'.
    3. the "base" amount of skill increases per level is 3. Add one for every 5 points of Learning you have above 10. Book starsign gives an extra increase per level, Cup does the same but only every other level. Bards received two extra increases, I think.

Training dice, as far as I know, are mostly affected by class (skills related to your class get higher dice, and notably, paladins can never increase Necromancy) and how much pumping a particular skill has already received.

Thanks! I kept thinking that the acid spit would've been in the spell list. Are there other class/race abilities that fall under the 'm' menu?

If you get a particular corruption that makes your breath particularly acidic, try 'm'.
