    Default Duyate, DE merchant, became an Avatar of Order

    My second win and my first ultra ending. This was the third major attempt to do an ultra with a DE merchant ("major" = "I do not count the weaklings who did not even manage to get to level six"). First was Terivsi, who had the luck of finding a fellow DE with a generic shop in the UD; she died from the critical hits of the ACW. For the next attempt, then, I decided to be as high level as possible before doing the ToEF; and so Heudria died in the Library, courtesy of a mimic hivemind. This made the amulet of free action my new favorite necklace, and I was glad of this choice when Duyate found a greater mimic in the Casino shop.


    The night Duyate was born, her long lost brother came back home. Cursed with strange deformities in the body and insanity in the mind, he lived years of suffering and loneliness before dying; in the few moments his mind turned clear, he told tales of forbidding caves and terrifying monsters in a faraway mountain range. Duyate decided that one day she would go there to find out the truth.

    Backed by the wealth of her family, she became a merchant and traveled through Ancardia trading magical rods; with the skills and the knowledge gained in these peregrinations, she finally headed for the Drakalor Chain. From the very start, Duyate realized the unforgivingness of the caves; in a misguided endeavor, she tried to dive past a small cave, only to end the effort in a hasty retreat which used all the charges of her offensive wands. But luck soon walked at her side, with some events that would turn the tides of her quest: drinking a potion, she gave up some connection to the mana flow in exchange for strength; a benevolent deity made her fists strong like iron; on an errand for an ancient dwarf, who demanded the head of a vile necromancer, a djinni granted her a wish; and so she saved the life of a legendary sage, and gained a lot of information and precious items. Before she knew it, Duyate found herself in deeper and deeper levels, crashing an heinous snake, and down to a wall of flames.

    But you should never become conceited in the Drakalor Chain, mortal peril can come from anywhere. After battling steel golems and sipping a lot of pools, she tried to exploit a state of doom to hunt beasts in the forest: she had heard that drakalorers valued boar skulls a lot. And she almost died for this folly: these furry tanks hit hard and run fast; even with blessed 7LBs she couldn't outrun them. She should have known better, after all they are called *giant* boars, not cuddly bunnies, and even bunnies around here don't seem so cuddly...

    More vigilant after this misadventure, she proceeded to collect other valuables: a platinum ring from an eerie lake, and from an untalkative ghost a weird tome, later bartered for some priceless scrolls. Then a steaming incursion to get the cooked corpse of the ACW; the critter fell easily thanks to a lot of wands and some knowledge of Frost Bolt gained in the Library.

    A big gambling establishment included a shop. Toondror, the human shopkeeper, had crazy prices; he also sold Sun's Messenger and Nature's Companion. Duyate opted for a special discount, and left the place in a hurry and loaded with loot.

    After that she faced some dire challenges. First the cat lord. Duyate had splattered a tiger by mistake, and then she just hadn't cared anymore about avoiding felines. This made their lord angry and powerful; webbing around proved pointless, so she fled to the stairs and continued the fight in another level, with the help of wands, poisoned arrows, and healing potions. Never relax, though; a few levels below a quickling king almost avenged the cat lord. In another level she found a lesser vault of black dragons, and left it for the future; but, wait, what will that contiguous room contain: open the door, SPLASH SPLASH SPLASH, lots of ancient black dragons; retreat retreat, but outrunning the dragons seems so difficult... oh wait, they had melted away her only pair of 7LBs! But luck began to shine again in the next level, where a great karmic wyrm dropped a RoDS; boots replacement service!

    After some commerce with a psycho ratling and an ugly witch, Duyate wrote a few scrolls, planning for the next objective: a mesmerizing panoply of tunnels lurking below the ruins of a long forgotten civilization. What a place! And what an odyssey to reach its true core, the underground palace of the Emperor. But he and his mages fell quickly to her stunning powers, and she reaped quite some rewards: six PoGAs, four PoCCs, a potion of strength, and Wyrmlance, which would help with the black dragons.
    Even these riches didn't sate her appetite. Duyate went to loot a vault of giants and obtained Thunderstroke and Skullcrusher. A vault of undeads gave her much less, but defeating the emperor lich and his vassals made her three levels more experienced. Waiting for the darkest night turned out not so tedious, she spent the time with Kethreldios, who ran a potions shop in a dungeon nearby. When she entered the stone circle, Keriax became visibly confused (a MeRcHaNt hErE?!?), and this shortened the fight.

    In a stormy level she crushed the skull of a loony summoner. In a claustrophobic cave a mob of shadow wyrms kindly dropped !demo arrows, which Duyate put immediately to good use to destroy rocky fiends. A fortified temple suggested an advance and retreat maneuver: she quickly plunged into the chamber to take out as many sources of confusion as possible, then retreated in the corridor after the wizards went into a summoning frenzy; she disarmed a trap and created a door in its place, and, when the archmage opened the door, she aimed a torrent of arrows at his position, even after darkness surrounded him.

    Wielding Wyrmlance, she entered a side branch of a side branch of the dungeons. The titular inhabitants did not hinder her very much. Instead, a horde of red dragons surprised her; they hit harder than ancient blue dragons. And, in another level, a bunch of earth elementals frustrated her even more: taking cover from the lightnings in the dug side of a corridor, Duyate greeted the elementals with a rapier of penetration and switched to Wyrmlance when a dragon approached. Reached the bottom of the caves, she searched for her prey; here it comes... no wait, just a great blue wyrm. And then another great blue wyrm. And another and another and another and another... she explored the whole level before finding unpronounceable-name guy, and she squashed him with all the force of her frustration; still not satisfied, she vented the remaining ire over the giver of the quest.

    By now the killing spree was set in motion. Next stop level 26 of the infinite dungeon, to do another favor to the minstrel: Duyate tried and tried to hit the quickling bard, but always failed to pin him down to the floor; after a lot of vain attempts, she remembered she had a few unerring quarrels, and, presto!, a single hit and bye bye Filk. Then off to a scintillating cave to vanquish the emperor moloch, which left behind a strange scroll.

    To make sense of the scroll, she sought the advice of Khelavaster, who had retired and was setting up a golf club in a small village. The sage appeared very excited, for the first time upon seeing a scroll (good grief!, this guy seems to have read everything; really surprising, given the pitiful lifespan of his race). Grabbed the scroll, Khelavaster began some arcane rituals Duyate never witnessed before; a huge amount of mana filled the air, you could almost swim in the magical power that flooded the village, and soon the hands of the sage held a gleaming weapon, a red trident freed from a hidden prison, the mighty weapon to wield in the path to make Order triumph over chaos.

    The orbs opened the road to the deeper levels. A useless potion gave a useless shirt. D50 allowed no useful digging. Duyate waded through mutants and yucky blobs, then attracted the balors in the corridors with some game of levers. With the gate closed for the moment, she cleared the large room. She dressed herself properly, boosted her stats and spirits and entered the portal: surfing a sea of swirling chaos with the red trident as her sail, she ventured into a strange realm, evading terrifying figures and huge shadows, until the supreme honcho greeted her, "WeLcOmE, tInY mOrTaL!".

    Now Duyate stood in the ChAoS plane, with Andor Drakon just a few steps away. After a quick switch of amulets, she PoCCed him and started a deluge of !huma quarrels; these did not seem to make much of a dent in the nearly omnipotent vermin (on the flip side, almost all of Andor's magical bolts missed her; gotta love Alertness!). Then Duyate remembered how much more skilled she had become with bows, and she used Sun's Messenger to devastate Andor. After making him critically injured, she decided to finish the fight as a true merchant: with money as her missiles, it took a little more than thirty hits, and finally gold triumphed over ChAoS.
