    Guth isn't a good NPC, he's neutral.

Oh sure, he's helping you now - Chaos is doing too well and he wants to even it out. But after you close the gate and things start picking up he's probably going to sic wolves on the children in terenyo or burn dwarftown down just to make sure Law doesn't get too powerful.

Actually, I'd see him more as N+. I don't think he'd massacre a dwarven city, that would be too evil for a druid. Wolves? Hmm... Maybe, who knows, he was best buddies with Keethrax, and that guy is pretty sick when it comes to employing animals in one's army.

Guth is N- on his best day. I know this for a fact.
Once when I was up to pure evil in Terinyo, I
decided to rob Munxip, then slay the rest of the
town. Well, Munxip was a rational being, and so
tried to stop me. The next thing you know, here
comes Guth, wailing away with his confusion
attacks and fire barrage spells. Poor Munxip had
to try to fight us both, and wound up dead. Fear
    Guth.

Nothing evil. He probably just acted upon the well known saying: "Merchants are basically well-spoken thieves."

I'm going to look into trying to get him
    to attack the sheriff.

Yeah I didnt read all this shit.

But it isnt the best. By best I think of most powerful, most awesome thing in the game. This shield is not that, ToTRR is. Followed by platinum girdle, BoW, and RoTMC in my opinion. So there

But should you plan your game around the shield? Depends on PC and goals. You say tower is the hardest part of the game... Untrue for quite many PCs.

Maybe I'll stop here, keep it going

Depends on what you have and how strong you are... he is immune to all the elements except Acid. Wear confusion resistance if you have it. Use Ventriloquism first.

frommy experience he is worser in melee than all these glowing balls he tends to produce...
So far rolled 15 casters with RoDS and shamelessly killed them within 200 turns. For eternium glory!
    (after 15 I stopped counting...)
