    So my second char, by now level 10 mist elven Elementalist Random, has also ended her challange successfully! She used a very simmilar tactic to Flimml, but she got extremely lucky by finding a spellbook of invisibility. Practically she Li-Hon-Kayed most of her enemies... killed 'em with frost bolt while invisible x-) All in all she had a rather relaxed challange and never got into serious danger. Her gladius opponent was Bonk.

    Candle born female born ratling necromancer.

    Got my ass handed to me by Li-Hon-Kay. Frost bolts didn't do shit against him.

    Finally my last char was not so lucky... Stumpf, the orcish Duelist, died to the icy magic of Li-Hon-Kay. Sadly a fire lizard destroyed his main weapon and his complete (!) armor in the very fight before the gladius battle, so his chances against the Ogre were practically 0%.
    However, I enjoyed the competition a big lot and I'd like to say thanks to gut for organizing it!

    My third and final character in this challange was the random duelist. I rolled a troll. Who started with a strength of 18 and a toughness of 19, which might make him the wimpy-est Troll in the history of Ancardia. I do not play trolls often (dark elf mindcrafters are more my style) but I am assuming... I mean what is the point of even playing a Troll in the first place if your starting Strength is not over 25?!?!!

    Nonetheless...

    I am ambushed in the wilderness by undead and unable to successfully run from them but since I am honor bound to try nonetheless I dive through some water without swimming to get separation because they cannot swim and have to go around and I make it to the CoC without any kills. On D1, a door trap destroys my weapon. On D2 there are herbs which I can line-ID and thus might end up being useful if I get poisoned or sickened, but I never did. On D3, there is a kobold tension room which gives me a few levl ups and all the bows and arrows a character could ever want...unless they are a duelist and cannot realistically level their missile skills.

    Anyway, I blow through my first 20 fights with no problems, defeat Bonk the Hill Giant to get a weapon that is better than a short sword (1d6) and my first title defense is as a level 7 troll against a Hippogriff. No problem. My second is versus my old nemesis the Berserker King. Still no problem, I have a wand of fire that I zap-ID'ed with 2 charges left. He one hit kills me from 148 hp.


    I do not play Trolls often, but at this point I have to ask: what is the point if your St and To stats are not actually any better than the other races and all the HP in the world still does not keep you from dying anyway?

    Here are my results - thanks gut for organising the competition! Overall I wasn't too successful but all three characters made it through the first 20 rounds (though my third char didn't make it to the arena within the time limit and so doesn't really count).

    Mist elf:
    Tilat, female candle-born mist elf thief
    I went for heir gift, which may not have been the best choice. Reached the arena at level 6 (and a full 23 hp), turn 1300. Had to pray once for a dark sage after he bolted me down to 7hp.
    Round 20 was Bonk, who was faster than me but didn't hit too hard (yay mist elf powers). Kept kiting him to heal up in between whittling his health down.
    Post round 20 Tilat's weaknesses really became evident, wasn't doing enough damage and had no HP buffer. Beat a dark orc but was horribly killed by a lightning lizard afterwards.

    Ratling:
    Lost a healer to a strange Adom server/putty issue when entering Terinyo, so I had to reroll - and I got the world's dumbest wizard: Chiyo, candle-born ratling wizard with a learning score of 10. Decent starting spellbooks including fire bolt and ice ball, though I had trouble even learning fire bolt. Since I wasn't getting a lot of castings I would go on to book cast when feasible.

    Explored both S3 and D3, which had a goblin vault netting three tomes (which I didn't read at the time, hoping for more learning and pumping concentration).
    Descended to arena level, where I had to fight my way through a ton of rats. Since I was worried about exhausting my castings, I fought them in melee. You know where this is going... "The giant rat hits you! You feel sick." Great. Now I'm sick with no cures, my learning is 9 and my other stats similarly abysmal, my new effective max HP (due to sickness) are about 13. I pray, but of course my god decides what I really need is to have my power points restored.

    I decide to fight in the arena anyway and try to cast things to death, book cast if possible, so I can level and get a bit of a buffer against the dreaded final sickness attack. This char was unable to fulfil nerd challenge 1 (both my other chars managed it) since she was so weak at that point and my opponent was another giant rat.
    Leveled up so my max HP with sickness went up to a glorious 17. Decided to read the three tomes I'd found and got Cure Light Wounds (yay), Magic Missiles (double yay!) and Mystic Shovel (bleh, dropped).

    Still sick, I continued fighting and using Cure Light Wounds to stay at "max" health. Got poison resistance off a spider opponent. Finally my sickness wore off (without a final feverish fit) after I had completed 12 fights. Back to a whopping 64 max HP! I was still extremely weak in melee and would instead bookcast Firebolt from a distance, then bounce the mobs with Magic Missile.

    My 20th opponent was Bonk again, who died before he could get to me. Equipped the gladius and finally learned a few castings of Ice Ball.

    I managed to kill 10 more opponents, including a berserker lord, chaos plague bearer and steel zombie (who shrugged a lot of the bolts). I was starting to feel better about my wizard, but of course the RNG wanted to have some fun and sent me a mimic hivemind. I tried to lure it into some webs a spider had left, but that just gave it time to catch up with me. I cast Ice Ball for the first time, and the hivemind decided to go into a blind rage instead of panicking. RIP Chiyo. Was a lot of fun fighting through the sickness though.

    Duelist:
    Dark elven duelist went to D1, fell into pit, died to pit viper. Mercy reroll used.
    Nadra, the candle-born hurthling duelist happily made it through D1 and an orc tension room. Arriving on D2, I was horrified to find myself in the middle of a huge river. I tried to swim four squares to the next room but found it was a dead end. At this point, I realised that I wouldn't make the 2000 turn limit since I had to heal up before each swim. I decided to try anyway and see if I could survive and fight, even if Nadra would have to be disqualified.

    Finally got back to the first room and swam upriver into the watery unknown. Had to pray three squares in but made it to the other side, where I found the staircase. At this point, I had three weapons to choose from: rusty short sword, rusty crude knife, rusty battle axe. I decided on the short sword, descended and berserked my way through another (thankfully sparsely populated) level to arrive at the arena level.

    Finally my rusty weapon broke and I thought I would have to fight my opponents bare handed, but the RNG took pity and provided me with two spear traps on the arena level. Ended up with a cursed spear though - grr. I started my first fight at around turn 3500.
    Fights up to 20 were uneventful apart from a fire lizard who destroyed my cursed spear, but also most of my armor. I'd taken PV talents up to Steel Skin, so I was still all right.

    Round 20 gave me Spardakius - tough, but he panicked before he could kill me. Wielded the gladius.

    Nadra managed to kill 18 more opponents, including some paralyzers (via thrown rocks), a troll chief and a hill giant chieftain, both of which I could kill only just via hack & back + candle healing. Nadra was at level 10 when she met her next opponent (or at least met the rock he threw at her from outside her range of vision, seriously wounding her). Turned out to be a frost giant, who was able to take 30ish HP off Nadra with successful missile hits. No wands, no potions - Nadra tried hack & back as well as prayers, but she finally died when the frost giant was critically wounded.

    So here's my random race duelist Star Sign Sword, male mist elf duelist Chal_1. I give him the talents "Tough" and "Aggressive". He has good elven armor , a good cloak and a rapier, but I can buy only one cursed large ration in Terinyo. The wilderness was no problem, both a large jackal pack and a horde of lizard men were evaded and so at turn 123 I enter the Caves of Chaos.

    The first Dungeon 1 has a book shop with Velbreek, the MIST ELVEN shopkeeper, wow! a lot of really cheap books, but I have only 8 gold ... and he sighs and I go on. In the mean time I got some rocks for throwing and my character levels up to Level 2 (11 HP) . The second Dungeon has a very nice goblin vault! Superb! Levelling! At Level 3 my mist elf has 16 HP and I give him talent "Good Shot". Then my Mist Elf levels up to Level 4 ( 18 HP ) .

    The third dungeon is the Arena already - Shit - I should have levelled more before reaching it, I was at about turn 1200. My mist elf levels up to Level 5 ( 22 HP, Str-12 To-10 ) - boy oh boy, how will this turn out? I will fight without shield, because I don't know whether one of the two I have is cursed...

    I slay the werewolf but i have only 3HP left, so I change to Very defensive mode and I read a scroll - it's an identify scroll that I use on my potions: 2 healing potions! I drink one of them and I'm bloated again. My character levels up to Level 6 , I give him the talent: hardy, so he has astonishly 27HP! At HP 11(27) I switch to tactics "Defensive" to gather sword marks, a golden ring is ring of protection +1 - fine!

    next Arena opponent: an anghek - boy oh boy - a tough fight
    I eat the ankheg corpse in front of the next Arena opponent - a orc chieftain - to scare him! The result: now I have HP 4(27) left...

    I let her do some webbing and I get poisoned after a while it wears off

    next Arena opponent: a cave bear

    Ah - there's a light trap in the arena, useful!

    I search for monsters to help me reach Level 7 at least,´ but no monsters running around in the Arena level and I don't wanna kill the traders

    next Arena opponent: Ripclaw, the Troll! Ripclaw runs into the light trap, and I kill him - Tataa! now I have the golden gladius!

    next Arena opponent: an orc, my character levels up to Level 7 and still only has 29 HP!

    ouch, I can't hurt him with throwing rocks - I am stunned, 2HP >> first prayer!

    I drink my mana (don't ask me why ... ) - anyway it's cursed
    Yet I get him, but without the light trap it would not have been possible ...
    now all my quarrels are in the arena!

    so I can collect the quarrels again


    next Arena opponent: a giant frog
    next Arena opponent: a werewolf lord - shit

    Character levels up to Level 8 >> ---- 33 HP against a werewolf lord uaaaaa ----

    after two or three hits the werewolf lord gets me to 4 HP,
    then I did some damage, then he did and I died!


    What I could have done differently

    1) I should have identified my last scroll, but "increase melee accuracy" doesn't help with artifacts

    2) I should have drunk my invis potion but the last thing I remember is that werewolf lords see invisible
    so I didn't try it

    3) wear the girdle of greed [2,0] - but it wasn't identified and I absolutely hate cursed girdles ...

    but I think it's a wonder I survived that long anyway ... 12075 xps / 8046 turns
