    Default Mist Elf Wizard - UCG Archmage

    *WARNING* Long post + potential spoilers

    After losing a very promising ME Wizard to the Chaos Archmage, I was adamant about winning with a wizard, and making him into an archmage - since Mist Elves have the highest PP per race, I figured it was the best combination to try it. Many were lost along the way, but finally Vanseril prevailed!

    Early game with a wizard is lots of fun and I did my standard route - went to HITW and killed a mugger, and headed over to SMC. Clearing the cave I hit lvl 5 and left (staircase down was 1 room away from entrance), went to Druid Dungeon. Got to DD:5 and a lesser daemon forced me to flee as I wasn't strong enough and lacking TP. Left and went to PC - on first floor was a small ring shop which I managed to get to restock 5 times or so throughout the course of the game. On PC3 I encountered an artifact vault room, and after using mystic shovel + invis to dig around and scout I found the room, guarded by a named steel zombie. I managed to drag a few mobs out of there but they were much stronger than what was expected on this level, so I left it for later. Dove to the bottom level and cleared the vault - at this point I still didn't find an altar, and almost no corpses were dropping so I was lacking in resistances. I had decent armor and kept book casting to train Mana so was able to take some hits and had a large mana pool.

    Dove to HMV, didn't find anything of note in there aside from a pool (which I never came back to). HMV had two angry farmers running around which I hoped would stay alive until I needed them.

    At this point I cleared the druid dungeon hoping to get =Acid from a slug, but again no corpses. I jumped back to PC:3 for the artifact and found out it was shining long spear soaker...... screw you RNG . I didn't have swimming so headed over to CoC - I was lvl 13 at this point. On D:2 there was another ring shop which restocked ~8 times in total, and a blink dog farm - managed to get two corpses. I hit the arena and beat the first 18 fights, dove to DT and got my first quest (berserker lord if I recall correctly) and portal quest. I also cleared the big room by using my many wands of door creating, luring and slowing a jelly once inside. I proceeded to use gardening (new top 5 skill for me) to pump my stats and harvest valuable spenseweed (once I got curative spells these became somewhat obsolete), and pepper petals for creating booze for wand recharging (Carrot juice + pepper petals) for later.

    Completed pyramid for much needed Ankh and armor, and went to dwarven graveyard. I had been pick pocketing quite a bit this game (up until around level 25 when I got bored of a-1 a-1 a-1 a-1...) and on the bottom level found a wand of wishing (3 charges) and eternium 2hs (I think it was there)! Killed Nonnak and Griff, got artifacts, and went back to HITW to stash some gear. I found 2 scrolls of danger, and had everything aside from Boar skull, so I read one scroll of danger in the wilderness and used my wishes for AoLS, red dragon scale mails, find weakness, and SLB. Heading back to graveyard to dig up graves and found a RoDS and some decent stuff, when the last great treasure grave was a Lich King. On first turn I looted everything I could and he dropped my Le from 30 to 27 (#$%!) so I teleported out of there never to return.

    Next I headed to get the Ring of High Kings and found my berserker lord for the quest. I didn't have cold spells yet this game, but had a cold wand (5 charges). ALMOST died due to stupidity when I froze a bridge to the ring and after using 3 charges I opened the door and cast fireball by accident melting my return path. I was so sure that I had melted it from under my feet I was about to bang my head on the wall, but I was safe on my ice island. I quickly dispatched the skeletal King and used my last charges to build a bridge back to land.

    Dove to clear water temple and reached fire wall, encountering several lesser vaults on the way, one of which gave me Hammer of the Gods. I tried using it as missile but it was unnecessary and didn't confer the =shock to me, so I stashed it. Headed to Fire tower and mapped out my path to the top with lots of teleporting and magic map. Got beaten down pretty badly by a fire giant king before teleporting him away which was a scary moment. Defeated the Dragon with Acid Ball/Magic Missile and stashed his corpse in Terinyo next to the snake and druid. Dove down to the casino level, collected everything in one corner and it had absolutely nothing. The best they had was a single RoDS, a Bracers of To +4. I bought a ring of doom for 6k (finding one on the next level grrr), and proceeded to get the cat ring. Took me awhile to find him as he was on the other side of the level and when I did find him he was at half health! Could be from the titans and molochs that were walking around.

    At this point I got my first corruption - Mana Battery! Since I was going to try for an archmage this was good for me, as I had a large stash of wands - I just hoped I wouldn't find a wand of wising and be faced with that dilemma. Headed up the DF shortcut and cleared the level - nothing special found in armor, and weapons had 4 eternium quarterstaves, an iron 2hs of penetration, and wyrmlance. I had good favor with my deity and decided to pool sip for intrinsics as opposed to wishing. Drained all but 3 of the pools in DF and came out (aside from lots of stat potential increases) -See Invis, -Petr, -Sleep, -Death (sadly no -para) + a few minor negative effects.
    Hit the Mino Maze at lvl 24 and cleared it with the usual frustration of choosing the wrong set of stairs on the first floor. Killed the emperor with ease and got the axe, as well as 5 PoGA and Iron Crown of Halvor, which is luckily made from eternium. Found a writing set (6) and wrote 6 scrolls of danger; cursed them, and read them in the wilderness. I started finding decent gear as I always switched to my ring of doom when wandering outside. Found the boar skull after my 4th boar. Used the Mino Axe exclusively for the rest of the game, until I got ToRR.

    Next I went to the Ice Queen Domain after leaving everything at home - the fire/ice fight was really cool, but after joining in the bloodbath I went from N- to C without noticing. Got the quest from Ice Queen, and since I was already C went to demented ratling to sac artifacts (Sword of Nonnak, Phial, Mummy wrap, shining spear, black torc, and Big punch), and completed Gaab Baay's quest.. I might have done the chaotic quests and became neutral again before approaching Ice Queen - can't recall the order. Had a lot of fun in the frost giant caves - I found 3 or 4 statues, and the bottom level featured a red dragon greater vault that contained ~10-15 Greater red wyrms. While clearing the outside a robes of resistance dropped randomly, and I ended up killing a number of the dragons through the wall with Ice Ball. Clearing that vault boosted me from 25 - 35, and rewarded me with Executor, Crown of Leadership, and Silver arrow - four artifacts is great, though none of them were all that appealing at the time aside from the robes - I did use the silvery arrow + long bow of hunting on occasion though.

    Did the rift after - relatively uneventful, and I secured many books including Wish, the weird tome, much coveted Farsight and curative spells.

    Dove to air temple, stupidly realizing I didn't have shock immunity while inside and losing a number of scrolls/potions. I had a blue dragon scale I had wished for and brought along but realized it was no longer on me... thinking I must have dropped it God knows where by accident, I headed back to HILW to get one of my other pairs. Dragged Yuglash to the safe area of the level and killed him with ease (stashing him at Terinyo), and continued down to find a Greater Undead Vault. After a long long struggle, I ended up clearing it and was rewarded with Grod and Ironfist, and possibly gauntlets of peace (never found them).

    Took out the Earth temple and headed topside to kill Keriax - a few acid balls and he was toast (I was a powerhouse at this time though with Willpower at 64 and Mana at 70). Now it was time for the Mana temple, a place I was admittedly terrified of. Headed down there to get a lay out the land and used scrolls of monster detection to bomb those damn eyes through the wall. Wrenched my last charge of trap detection for the initial row of traps, launching an acid ball every few steps. As I reached the bottom right corner to my pleasant surprise the archmage had teleported ~8 spaces away to my left! How thoughtful of him to save me the trip. Because I had the cover of the wall I proceeded to blast him with magic missile out of harms way and killed him rather uneventfully. Took his corpse to terinyo, and headed back down to the Blue Dragon Caves.

    BDC is nuts with p22. Emperor Liches, Greater Molochs, and Balors (oh my!) in a cavernous level. I dove as fast as I could this time; I used to grind Ancient Blue Dragons for gear here but no way was this happening now. A level or two before the bottom a wonderful dragon dropped Preserver! Not only did I have one of the best artifacts in the game, I was now only lacking -Stun as far as resistances. Completed the Dragon's quest and hit lvl 50, and surprisingly let him live for a change.

    Visited the casino and grabbed everything I could use, which wasn't much. My mana battery sucked their wands dry which got them pissed at me, so I was forced to remove the shopkeeper's head. Funny thing here; when I visited the black market afterwards the shopkeeper wouldn't let me leave as I owed the merchants guild a few thousand. I paid him and let him live (for now).

    Went to assassin prince being very careful not to kill anything non-hostile or panicked. Got the quest, killed him, and went to mad minstrel for location. the dive to emperor moloch was uneventful, and he was killed with relative ease. Farsight is a blessing, as hanging out right next to the emperor was a greater fire elemental just waiting to burn up the crumpled scroll. Killed him first to be sure. Got the ToRR and was now on day 119. Converted to Lawful, made a few more cursed scrolls of danger and proceeded to summon monsters in the wilderness to kill time until Silverlight. The entire game I was searching every armor piece for xxx of power with no luck. The first Great Karmic Wyrm group I summoned (it's fun summoning 8 of those in the wilderness!) dropped me clothes of power and a wand of wishing which I promptly absorbed. A few days later a Chaos warrior dropped an eternium plate mail of life as well which was nice. Basically I just used the next 14 days* (see next paragraph) to grind outside getting wands, potions, and rings. Got my PP up to ~2800 by the time SIlvernight came around. At this point I had ~150 potions of water, the majority of which were from normal gameplay and not the wilderness grindfest.

    *Interesting side note here - in p22 I periodically back up my saves after every session, milestone (vault, temple) before exploring new dungeon levels, or 5-10 dungeon levels to prevent major set backs from crashes. For fun I decided to dive down to I:66 to get the Scepter of Chaos (what a PITA that was with massively increased spawns...) and as I was climbing back to the surface I crashed when entering a room on I3. I even thought to myself at around I10 that I should probably back up, but seeing as I haven't crashed yet I thought it wouldn't happen... Waste of 2 hours . Naturally I didn't try that again, so used that time to grind more in wilderness (basically just killing time until Silvernight) and happened to find Justifier on an ancient blue dragon. By the time I finished this, I had also killed a number of molochs and greater molochs (former by summoning, later not.. probably need a higher danger level outside) and had ~7 hulking armors stashed away... a weaponsmith's wet dream! Each armor melted down to ~100 eternium ingots as I recall.

    When Silvernight came I proceeded to wish for many many SoCR, eventually being able to wish for power. That coupled with using the Mana Orb to constantly restore my mana I was able to build my power base to ~9k at my minimum mana levels (~37) and increased my hitpoints a bit with Ultra healing potions to around 300. For fun I messed around with a setting up a ring wish engine to have ~ 10 RoDS for spare wishes after getting my stats back to 99. I got every skill to 100, but didn't have the energy at that point to wish for better marks to 15 grandmaster in everything - I'd only end up using ToRR or Mino Axe at this point anyway and both were high enough.

    Final dive to Andor Drakon was relatively uneventful - did Kherab's quests for turning C- and steamrolled over everything in my path. D:49 produced Sun's Messenger. Chaos plane had 120 monsters on it and it seems that Andy was beefed up a bit - he dropped me from 900 to 600 a number of times. If I hadn't of been an archmage this could have been a much trickier battle. I did manage to beat the game with no corruptions and still at 99 in all stats

    A few impressions on this play through:

    1. The increased spawn rate can be fun, but I don't know how a pure melee character would do this - I used melee most of the time towards the end of the game and sometimes from frustration I would just acid ball or teleport to move away from the swarm. There is definitely more loot to compensate for this though, but a balance needs to struck.
    2. Even with increased spawns, some areas like BDC should be heavily skewed to spawn dragons and not regular mobs.
    3. Chaos archmage - maybe he should only start teleporting if he is damaged? I feel like how I goaded him to come out and teleport could be abused to face him solo. Then again, a chaos archmage might just be that cocky to try and take you out single handedly (after all, it's what we're doing!).
