How much time were you playing ADOM before you could successfully do blanket runs or rob the Casino shop? Or get to DT without using any scrolls/books and completing the quest to get literate? In my case, weeks or maybe months in the first case, months or probably years in the second, and definitely years in the third (playing unspoiled, but hey, that's how you should play the game - if not, I'd say it's your way of playing that is not exciting, not the achievements).
Here in the forum we are a bunch of hardcore players but most of the new players that come through Steam aren't going to be like that, maybe only 10% will manage to finish the game and many won't even hit Dwarftown. There must be basic achievements so that you give most players motivation in their learning of the game. A couple of days ago I tried Age of Wonders III for the first time and in the first two hours of play I unlocked 8 achievements, I could say the same of many games, it's the standard thing: have some easy achievements to motivabe novices, and then go up all the way to the almost-impossible achievements for the pros.
Honestly I often criticise stuff in the game (precrowning!) but in this case I think TB has nailed it. Of course the list of achievements can see minor adjustments, nothing is perfect, but the general suggestions for changing the difficulty balance or removing certain kinds of achievements are for the worse IMO. The current list has a list of achievements that is varied, has something for every kind of player (even a couple of achievements for grinders, which I don't like but hey, they'll have to give them something to do too), and a good mix of difficulties.
Funny that you say that, considering that TB's list has about 10 achievements that do not have anything to do with mid-late game. Among the remaining almost everything else is about end-game. 37/71 achievements require the PC to reach below the wall of flames, and about 25+ of these require the PC to win the game. This is ADOM, where some people struggle to get a single win in years. I mean that's just absurd.
I like my women like my ADOM loot - hunted as treasure and in extra quantity.
