    Default Second win: dark elven archer

    Second victory coming less than 2 weeks after the first, pretty neat! I was thinking that a non-spellcaster might be hard, but I guess archers with Find Weakness are in a league of their own. After a failed attempt with a promising drakeling assassin one-shotted by a giant dragon turtle in the Water Dragon Cave (seriously, ~350 damage exactly on the stairs, I didn't even see him) this one went smoothly.

    After finding staircase down in SMC I went to Village Dungeon for obligatory Healing skill. VD:6 spawned a neutral altar which was already more than I could dare to ask for... or so I thought. After tedious monster sacrificing I got crowned at level 9 with Thunderstroke. Wow. Archers crowned with this or True Aim early on are suddenly switching to easy mode, I swear. Level 9 PC running around with an indestructible, PP-free, returning projectile doing around 20d4+20 damage (at that point, IIRC) was pretty damn broken. I got an acid immunity, but after the crowning gift I really couldn't complain.

    Post-crowning took a while too and gave me a pretty decent gift, Ironfist, which helped with carrying capacity a lot. Now I could continue on with the game. PC, UD and early CoC was laughably easy. Actually, almost everything from that point ended up being easy, though I didn't dare to try the bug dungeon.

    The absolute highlight was one-shotting Ancient Chaos Wyrm. It took me half a minute to realize that no, it didn't teleport, it didn't become invisible and it's not a visual glitch and yes, it really only took one shot. Even with my best wizards I couldn't hope to achieve this.

    The most dangerous encounter (and even that wasn't really that bad) happened when Yulgash decided to say hello by summoning quickling kings. I had to backtrack out of the temple side of the level to get my gear and pray once on the way because they were punching through my ~50 PV. Other than that - no sweat at all, except for maybe when a giant dragon turtle got into my vision in Water Dragon Cave, but this time I was smarter and just used teleportation. Cat lord powered up by 5 feline kills didn't turn out to be as dangerous as I expected him to be. On D:50 I had 180/61 DV/PV on Coward and balors couldn't even dream of hitting me.

    I had three greater vaults, two guaranteed and one random, and all three of them had giants. I was happy about that at first, but I grew more and more bored each time. Giants = no challenge + tons of HP to get through. Artifacts were pretty bad too:
    - 1st: Wyrmlance (standard), Justifier (why), black tome (WHY)
    - 2nd: staff of the archmagi (so useful), Sun's Messenger (actually nice if only I didn't have Thunderstroke already, artifact missiles > artifact missile weapons in 1.2.0), Serpent's Bite (wasn't really useful, but I used it for laughs to get through the rest of the vault in melee)
    - 3rd: staff of the wanderer and piles of gold (wow)

    In the end, even though I had to backtrack so many times I wanted to puke, Minotaur Maze turned out to be the most rewarding location again - minotaur emperor along the usual tons of PoGA and PoCC dropped Aylas Holy Scarf. I'll take that +10/+10 in amulet slot any time.

    D:49 gift was scorched spear, which was worse than the eternium spear I've been using for the second half of the game. By the way, one-handed polearms on non-melee PCs are too good in my opinion, they provide way too much DV.

    I'll focus my next attempts on either competent melee class (probably Fighters or maybe Assassins) or severely limited spellcasters, i.e. Mindcrafters, should be fun. I'm now one step closer to achieve my dream of winning with a pure dual-wielding ranger.

    Congrats!

    DE Archer was my first win and it is really powerful indeed.

    Btw, why didn't you wield the RCT? did you really need all that DV/PV? The bonus to Dex is really helpful for damage and speed.

    I remember after getting to lvl 30 or so with my archer, i didn't get hit at all in melee. If some monster, by huge miracle, got into melee range, i just TP'd away and shoot him (learning TP is easy with so much Le and you don't have better uses for mana anyway), no one could withstand more than 2 shots anyway and i was spewing them like a machinegun.

    RCT was actually my second missile of choice if Thunderstroke didn't come back - I never really used slaying ammo. Honestly I was too lazy to switch right and left hand slot every time too. Besides I didn't need that bonus Dexterity since I was killing things on Coward anyway and that 100+ DV before bonus from Tactics looked so nice. 47 DV from right/left hand slots alone is hard to pass on.

    As for spells, I couldn't get Literacy higher than 60-something for a very long time and reading books was REALLY hard. I also managed to completely forget that Ghost Librarian helps you with that and I skipped Library completely. My bad I suppose. I don't recall finding Teleportation and Strength of Atlas books either, which would be definitely very handy. At least I finally got a taste of playing without SoA in mid to late game, ha ha.

    Congrats on the win ! Artifact missiles are truly awesome indeed. One cannot describe the feeling of having Sun's messenger and True Aim.

    No need to, when it comes to ADOM, it's like in real life, you learn as long as you live
