Boobietrapped Stairs?

Anyone ever see this happen?
I stepped down a Stairway and instantly got hit by a 25 fireball.

Noticing the gem there, I reckon that something stepped on a trap as I came down
but nothing's in the last messages said that anything else died....

Can Stairs be trapped?

This has happened to me twice: a vortex hanging out *right* beside the stairs! They move so fast that they get the first turn, so you hit > and...surprise! Instadeath.

One of the more annoying ways death can hit you out of the blue, but at least it's not real life...
