Killed by thugs in outlaw town?

I was playing a Chaos Knight and went into a shop in an unspellable outlaw town and was beset by thugs pretty much instantaneously... is this normal?

You probably had the "aura of hate" corruption, since chaos knights start with 3 random corruptions.
This corruption causes NPCs to occasionally run away from you but also frequently makes shopkeepers go hostile for "scaring away their clients".

Yes the NPCs were running away from me so that must be it.

It's also normal for the criminals in that town to randomly go hostile on you even without any corruptions

Thugs aren't a normal spawn in the town though. They're much stronger than the typical monsters of the area.
