    Default First Ultra, DE Ranger

    I used to play ADOM actively for ~10 years since the release of 0.9.9. Never scored an ultra ending in the old version, but made a few legit gate-closers over the years. My most notable legitimate victories until now were both with drakelings, one a priest, another an elementalist.

    After the resurrection campaign I picked up 1.2.0 and started playing on-off again, this time the only goal being an ultra ending. After dozens of Stupid Deaths and one aspiring archer accidentally crowning prematurely, I finally managed to keep this guy, Oafejb the Dark Elven Ranger, alive all the way to the end.

    It was a total slow burn, taking over 125 days game time. All 50 hours of real-life time were well spent.

    Since it has been almost a month since I started this character, the early game is a bit of a blur. Here is a brief walkthrough:

    Rolled a DE Ranger, because I wanted to experiment with dual wielding. Dark elves start out as chaotic, so I decided to lure a small girl from Terinyo into the nearby forest, do unimaginable things to her, and make her my first kill. A change of attitude and morals would have to wait for later.

    Everything went smoothly up to Khelly. I didn't have an AoLS, so I had to spend some time grinding in Infinite Dungeon. I got lucky surprisingly quickly and found an AoLS, although I was mostly grinding I:24 for RoDS.

    At this point in game, I was dual wielding swords and spears, which was a nice combination of damage and DV. At some point in early-game I found a Sword of Sharpness, which made things much easier.

    Saved Khelly, did the graveyards and the water temple. Once I found a Ring of Ice, I could take my SoS to ToEF, which cleared easily enough. However, at this point dual wielding had become a bit dangerous, as the heavy hitters like Fire Giant Kings could land hits on me at uncomfortable accuracy. I switched to using a shield with the SoS, which turned the mid-game into a cakewalk. I would dual wield two SoS's (ended up finding 6) just for the kicks and speedy slaughtering whenever I was confident without a shield.

    Once I had fed the ratling, I decided to change my alignment (and repent for the small girl).
    Got crowned with Boots of Divine messenger (which are useful on 1 level of the game, compared to 7LB).

    All temples and bosses turned out to be extremely easy for this character. It was probably the combination of high damage from a single hand weapon, a shield, and archery that made him so versatile that almost no-one posed a threat. Here are some of the highlights:

    - Having killed dozens of cats, the Cat Lord was very tough, probably the toughest monster I encountered. I lured him out of his level and teleported around him while peppering him with humanoid slaying ammo. He would still land hits on me and got me to 1/5 health twice. I was rewarded with ~250k exp.

    - Nuurag-Vaarn lasted for 3 humanoid slaying quarrels
    - Threw a potion of cure poison at Keriax and shot him with dragon slayers
    - Emperor Moloch lasted for ~6 demon slayers

    - Cleared D:50 with slaying ammo. It took less than 10 minutes to clear the whole level. Fisty fell to a few demon slayers.
    -- On a side note, it was funny to receive the Silver Key as the uselesness gift and use it to block the chaos mutants into their chambers on D:50

    I was still at lvl 35 at the time of killing Srraxxarrakex, so I decided to spend some time in the BDC to get to lvl 45 for the Filk quest. Grinding Ancient Blue Dragons turned out to be very profitable in terms of drops like Robes of Resistance, True Aim, and Thunderstroke. I also scored 4 RoDS there. I wished for Concentration and saved the other three rings for later.

    Before my final dive, I used the Mana Orb to increase my Ma and get the corruptions to enter the quickling tree. I got to extremely corrupted without gaining the right corruptions, so I visited the Unicorn to clean up and let the damn quicklings in peace.

    Two RoDS were used for scrolls of corruption removal and an AoLS. I never had to use any of them.

    I ran through D:50, quaffed all boosters, used my remaining wish for speed, and went in. A few steps in the cHaOs plane revealed Andy and I barraged him with ~30 humanoid slaying quarrels. I was prepared to throws potions and use wands, but my speed was ridiculously high and I never needed any help. All he managed to do was take 1 step towards me and summon some minions before he fell to the ToTRR.

    nice!

    As far as first kill, don't stress about getting a hard vs easy thing. Better to dive to level 61 than kill a little defenseless girl.

    I kill muggers, even rarer and no alignment drops.

    I donīt mind playing an evil bastard who murders the whole of Terinyo for fun. It gets a little weird though, when you can get your alignment back to Lawful by sacrificing a few single coins one by one at an altar. I feel it would be more interesting to have an alignment system where the most Lawful alignment you can achieve is limited by the most chaotic act you have commited in the game. So that if you start the game by killing the little girl, you can maybe end the game as a god of chaos, but not as a champion of law.

    If someone killed a little girl it doesn't mean that this person would not improve and reform.

    But changing alignment with coins is ridiculous indeed. It would be interesting if alignment would not change from sacrifices.

    Play a Chaos Knight and you'll almost get that

    While we're at it, I have always thought performing lawful and chaotic acts should affect piety.
