    Default Miriam, the Mist Elven Weaponsmith, gate closer

    Decided to post a YAVP since I discovered some things that were new to me during this run. She was also pretty lucky with the RNG.

    Weaponsmith is a brilliant class for MEs. Detect traps and fire resistance (later immunity) render the early game much less dangerous. Decent toughness, 16-20 starting strength, athletics and find weakness make them very decent melee fighters. Down the line they can learn pretty much any spell in the game, provided you can find the books, which admittedly are rare. Definitely get treasure hunter.

    The run followed my usual mist elf starting pattern:
    1. Spawn monsters and have a quick look around at the SMC
    2. Drop by Terinyo for food
    3. Level safely to 10-12 at the ID
    4. Rescue Yrrigs if my character doesn't have Healing
    5. Fetch the (dead) puppy
    6. HMV

    The SMC sported a neutral altar right by the entrance, in a corner. I had already decided on going Lawful, but this made my choice even easier. I would come back later, convert the altar, and dump anything non-undead here for a quick crowning. The SMC contains a lot of neutral monsters, so you need to be chaotic or lawful. Getting to lawful alignment with a mist elf is trivial at any point in the game, with white necro and healing spells or potions. I did scout most of the level, but located neither the down stairs nor the waterproof blanket.

    Luckily mist elves level fast, so the ID grind didn't take long. By the time I left to properly start my game, I had a shield, studded leather armor [Edit: Yeah, my elven chain mail got shredded in an explosion almost immediately...] and 450 points in Cure Light Wounds (!). VD and PC were a breeze. VD1 had an altar where I IDed all my equipment and got started blessing and drinking stuff. In the gnoll vault at PC6 I found an AoLS! By the time I delivered the bad news to the tiny girl, I had all the resistances except lightning and was lawful from the starting quests + killing Hotzenplotz. I had also found both waterproof and fireproof blankets.

    The UD dive followed. I pickaxed past some monsters in a corridor and found the SMC stairs in the small area previously left unscouted. On UD3 a lightning vortex very nearly killed me. Damn. UD6 had a small book shop, which was probably the reason I never visited the Library, even though I pushed my Climbing to 100 fairly early specifically for that.

    Then followed the Arena, a few fights past the Gladius. I did Thrundarr's quests and visited the mystic, netting me the Rolf combo which I must say is very, very nice. I ended up using the axe for the remainder of the game. Remember to wield it southpaw. During Thrundarr's exploration quest I nosed around the dwarven halls a bit and narrowly escaped death by ancient white dragon fangs/breath. Even with one pip of resistance those guys are nasty!

    I returned to the SMC, dug out a trench in the cave wall next to the altar and set up a locked door to funnel the monsters over the (now lawful) altar. Some scary strong unsaccables. Eventually got crowned with the bracers of war and lightning immunity. Talk about jackpot.

    The rest of the game was very easy. I think there's something to what Kordanius said about mid-late game challenge. The thrill of the early game is making the best of difficult situations with limited resources, which is engaging. After a while your character is so well-rounded that you can deal with pretty much anything, and if you can't you can just bail and return later, better equipped. There are few really committal decisions.

    Rough order of the rest of the run:
    Gremlin Cave - Got the phial and did the old hold-down-the-arrow-key rank training thing for a while, a bit scummy I guess
    TotHK - no issues, remembered to retrieve the ring and pick up my gear in the correct order =P
    Griffyard - super easy, no grave robbing though
    Darkforge - my melee attack was a little underpowered for the golems, so I had to be rather aggressive and burn through quite a bit of healing; armories had nothing of interest except a white dragon scale mail and forge fodder
    IQD - wore the white dragon scale mail and killed everything except IQ herself for melee ranks and shield training; released all the prisoners, two of which became companions - goblin and some elemental that I considered leveling
    FGJC - meleed everything; artifacts were Vanquisher and Black Thumb, meh [Edit: Now that I think about it, I think I got these from the other vault. I left most of the artifacts unused.]
    ToEF - no issues; didn't scout the lower levels; finished the ACW with demon slayers, ate the corpse
    Bug Temple - cleared the upstairs grounds with bolt spells, I was already very fast at this point; most of the temple bugs were meleed, believe it or not - they're not so bad one-on-one at choke points

    I think I was around level 25 at this point. HP/PP ~200/260, DV/PV ~80/60 on Normal.

    [Edit: Oh! Cat Lord - I had killed 23 felines and had been a bit anxious about fighting the Master Cat. However, he dropped quickly without any fancy tactics.]
    CoC Water and Air Temples - Melee and bolt spells; ate the orb guardians

    Minotaur Maze - This got interesting, as I ran through my nice stack of scrolls of magic mapping from the bug temple about halfway down, and had to do the rest on foot. Then my castings of Teleport ran out. I noticed I was very low on edibles at about ML5 and hoped to god I would find ML7 quickly. I left the maze with exactly six Fried Bats (the ratlings had been out of lizards). Close call. Ate the emperor, never used the axe.

    Time for a deep dive down the CoC. Didn't scout much of the lower caverns. Guaranteed greater vault held giants. I meleed the titans. =P Earth Temple was a cakewalk. Did the Blue Dragon Caves before the Mana Temple. Left my stuff at the stairs next to the Sharad-Waador, but probably didn't have to with the reduced eq destruction from having immunity. Got Needle and killed Mr. Wyrm as thanks. Slowed myself a little early and had to chug some ultra healing while finishing him off. He regens quite fast.

    I paid the archmage a visit and planted a dwarven axe in his face. He had me do it in the dark so as not to embarrass himself in front of his entourage. I flicked the lights back on and ate him. Could've used him in the mino maze...

    With the game essentially over I decided to head back to Dwarftown to do a bit of smithing and honor my deity before the final push. I sacced half a million gold and traipsed over to Glod's for some quality time with his forge. Except... I no longer had the means to pay his extortionate 2500-a-pop fees. Screw it. Time to save the world.

    The D:49 uselessness gift was Shezestriakis and thus neatly lived up to its origins.

    I didn't bother with any fancy digging or wand of destruction tactics at D:50, just meleed everything at Defensive to minimize corrupting hits. Fisty required a little bit of healing and bolt spelling.

    On my way home I had planned on dropping by Yrruir, but realized I had never received the location from Guth'Alak. xP Worth the detour though.

    I found three RoDS during the game. Wishes: girdle of giant strength +12 (which was destroyed), another girdle of giant strength +15! (weaponsmiths need the extra carrying capacity), and finally emperor moloch. No wishes from the darkforge pools, though I did get petrification resistance, which was nice as I'd already had to dispatch a couple of gorgons.

    I'll make the case that wishing for the emperor moloch is one of the best mid-late game wishes you can make with a weaponsmith. You'll end up with 2-3 moloch armors, each of which can be melted down for 100-200 eternium ingots. By comparison a regular eternium plate mail produces 1-2 ingots. But the time I made the wish I had essentially won, so I didn't do much hardcore smithing in this game. Next time.

    I also discovered that you can train climbing by digging holes with a pickaxe and then climbing out of them. Good to know!

    In general I felt like a complete tank for much of the game, which is amusing considering mist elves are thought of as the most fragile race. Strength and Toughness ended up being my best stats by far. With the abundance of corruption remedies in the game now, I see few reasons not to eat the orb guardians, especially for lawfuls. Mist elves benefit from healing being twice as effective, in practice, which is a real boon to melee characters. They also make excellent semi-casters out of any class. I'm currently playing a lawful mist elf thief who just raided the Library and blasts everything with bolt spells.
