    So oddly, nobody has found any rivers this game.
    I suppose with a swim of 48, yang would have to try crossing it.

    My log:

    18049: After going left I find the downstairs straight away. That was easy...
    18069: A blink dog drops food... a large ration. I try to lighten our load but still end up burdened.
    18143: A fire vortex explodes against our lightning lizard. The blast deals us 40 damage, of which about 20 is healed via First Aid.
    18186: 64s quarterstaff found.
    18229: Scroll labeled "ABABILA" found. By now I discover Ratsputin died somewhere. RIP in pieces...
    18434: I kill my first monster this round: a flesh golem. VaVOOOOM takes care of everything else, really.
    18690: Level up! I push the following skills to their limits: Detect Traps, Disarm Traps, Literacy, Swimming. Got Keen Shot as a talent.
    18772: A monster drops a holy symbol. It's not cursed.
    18825: A master swordsman comes and I try to have our cursed dire wolf corpse disarmed and other weapons tried, but it doesn't work. I also try to train some crossbow skills for a while and get it to level 2.
    18856: Oops! Acid vortex coming our way, VaVOOOOM can't properly maneuver to engage him and vortex is dangerously close. Time to ditch the lizard and escape down! Now the game gets more interesting, I should say...

    I'm now on I19. I sense a certain tension. Time to identify the ironwood wand - gold detection! Hooray!
    ~18970: First room I see contains giant lizard, ghost lord, slow shadow. I tame the former but it dies almost straight away. The ghost lord ages us during our kiting attempt despite being on Coward - we are now middle-aged, 53 years old.
    19247: Another ghost lord came recently. I've been praying for a while via holy symbol and now it was time to kite again. But we got aged again (to old) and I got a werewolf coming from the corridor to the top left. I tried to calm down the dire wolves to be able to :s through and away past them, but I couldn't do it in time before being aged to death.

    tl;dr I won, I guess! I could probably have done better if I had thought to drink the potion of invisibility (was it ID'd? Not sure actually... *checks* Uh, I guess not) - then again, given how good monsters seem to be at tracking an invisible player, maybe not. I wonder if a cursed corpse in the weapon slot could ever rot? Because if not, in a pinch, this technique could be used to preserve a chaotic corpse for Guth'alak. Or, better yet, reported as a bug. Though to be fair, Food Preservation 100 can preserve corpses for very long times. If you'd just descended once, you'd have won through experience... At any rate, we're both in the finals, aren't we? I wonder if being winner is rewarded through coming before the 2nd place person, or something...

    Ditching the lizard was your error. He's way too powerful to leave behind.

    And yeah, the darkness / invis is not as useful anymore. One thing I don't know - can I re-tame an animal if I harmed it? That might have been a better use of my last seconds of life.

    Not really - I think the alternative would have been death by acid vortex. The vortex seemed to move first and I don't think VaVOOOOM could have gotten in an attack before the vortex splatted me. Even worse case scenario: vortex moves up and left next turn, VaVOOOOM breathes lightning, vortex dodges, I don't, then vortex splats and I end up at minus infinity HP.

    (Before the screenshot, the vortex was up and right compared to its current position, and the lizard was up and left. I issued the attack order successfully, but VaVOOOOM seemed to be lagging behind. Instead of successfully attacking the vortex he just stepped into its place. I figured the same would happen in the next two turns had I continued to try and stay on the level.)

    Especially darkness.

    I believe you can re-tame an animal if you hurt it, but I seem to remember that it's really hard (impossible?) to tame an animal that's significantly higher level than you. So I doubt you'd have succeeded. I'm not sure how fast the lizard was, but if I had the chance to get to the downstairs without him catching up I'd probably have tried escaping down in your situation too.

    He was towards the stairs, so would have been hard. I should have tried invis instead, now I know. Or just not be auto-fire on the rocks.
