    Default Worst (Non-Fatal) Luck I've Had in Awhile

    My current bout of bad luck...

    Playing an orc barbarian, aiming for fast win. Level 16 or 17, Griffyard, Pyramid, Darkforge cleared. Good stats. I have RoI, PV of 35, weapon is rune-covered trident or brutal eternium halberd. Turncount is about 12000, on pace for <30k win. I have wand of cold and good luck and good Wi score, so I decided to head over to High Kings to get the ring. Second level has a threat room of acid vortices. Yuck. After taking two hits of 60 damage, I realize I have no acid resist, but check inventory and find I have a ring. Great. Blow through the rest of the vortices. About 20 in total, but HP loss isn't bad... I come out about 150 HP down at the end of it. No big deal.

    Get down to bottom level and go to charge my wand of cold. It's gone. Dang. Acid vortices must have destroyed it. Probably 1000 turns wasted. Head back out, debating whether it's worth getting the IQD one. Exit the dungeon to head to there and get this message "You need special equipment to scale those mountains." @#$%.

    Stopped there and haven't been back. I can salvage the game for sure, but getting a new climbing set is tedious and the speedrun is shot. Will probably just abandon the character--no challenge in winning with a Barbarian at the point in the game I'm at.

    Since you were (sort of) speedrunning I'm surprised you were getting the ring at all. That's the first place I skip when I want to save time, bypassing the EG is easy, right? And the rewards (items / xp) aren't that great compared to the turncount it consumes, unless you really need the rings for resistances?

    I also have a history of bad luck with that place. Open threat rooms of dark elven princesses, quickling lords and other fun stuff like that.. I'm always leaving my climbing set on the stairs down of the first floor there, I had it destroyed several times.

    Yeah, I probably should have skipped it. I was short on fire resistance at the time, though I don't think that was the ultimate reason I went for it--probably just habit, I think.

    That's how most of my speedruns end - I find something nice early on or get carried away in a location I should really just ignore.
    Then all of a sudden a thought occurs, like "oh screw this speedrun, it's too good a char to finish the game so early".

    Threads like this bum me out. I've been playing the game since 2004, and still never had a single win. And you guys are talking about speedruns like the normal game is a guaranteed win. Bleh.

    Any of them and anywhere. I mix it up a lot. Some of them are stupid deaths (I got killed by some randomly spawning high-level "ghost" characters in the Village Dungeon recently, even), but I usually die while doing quests for Thrundarr, on my way out to the surface, after already making it down the first time. Can't tell you how many times I died to a just-slightly-too-strong monster on floor ~8 of the stupid dungeon. Other times I've gotten farther, but usually end up dying by trying to rush and not really having a good place to grind out some levels before taking on stronger enemies.

    You name it, I've died to/by/in it. Farthest I ever made it was to the elemental orb quests.

    I should just give up on speedruns. Things never go well for me. Farmer made it to ToEF in 18k turns. Was hoping for <30k on him. 324 speed, 183 HP, slaying weapon. ACW should be pushover....

    Stepped next to him with full HP and got instakilled. No bolts, just double crits on his melee attack (despite that I should get 3 turns for every one of his). Official cause of death is thorns that showed up from his corrupting attacks. Bleh.

    I was gonna say it's unlikely for double crits to kill you if you are wearing ankh but then I realized because you technically died from the thorns from your corruption you may have survived with 1hp if you hadn't gotten that corruption. But i'm not sure that the thorns corruption is capable of doing 25 damage.

    Either way that's really unlucky, although stepping next to the wyrm is exceedingly dangerous.

    P.S. Any particular reason why you're playing r60?

    wow, that's horrible luck. Taking a few calculated risks is part of what makes speedruns fun, but it can be frustrating when they turn out badly.
