Thread: First Win! Gref the Trollish Monk

Default First Win! Gref the Trollish Monk

ADOM had already been out 8 years when I first picked it up in 2002. Another 14 years of on and off playing and I closed the gate. As far as runs go it was a fairly normal go of things but I did end up at Death's door more than once.

Specifically during the mid game. An amulet of life saving had spawned in DT so I went pool sipping to try and secure a wish for red DSMs. Nearly aged to death from 1 sip. This slowed me down a bit as even the lowliest undead could possibly 1 shot me. I ultimately turned back to pools looking for a literal fountain of youth and managed to do so.

I also botched the destruction of a lever in my haste and blasted myself before finally leaving D50.

Precrowning: Trusted One, equipped this on a few occasions to avoid early touch of death paralyzation.
Crowning: Acid Immunity / Iron Crown of Havlor, almost always equipped. Took it off in the IQD and when crossing water.
FGJC: Whirlwind, didn't actually get to it. Greater undead vault stopped me.
Casino: Brannalbin's Cloak, wore it for the rest of the game when I got around to stealing it.
~D40-46: Greater Giant vault: Boots of the Divine Messenger, actually picked these up before deciding to rob the Casino. Immediately dropped 7LBs to wear these despite not really needing either.
D49: Bracers of War. Thank you based god.

Plenty of useful weapons were generated in this run including a few that I left in the Mana Temple. Ultimately the DV bonus from polearms made the difference.

I'm admittedly an awful ADOM player so let this be a testament to how good Monks are. Arguably one of the best classes in the game imo.

    Thanks for reading!

There's just not much about monks that isn't great. Their downsides are few and really not that severe.
You got a lot of my favorite items, looks like a fun run. What will you do next?

More monks! I have another in progress and it's looking really good. I found an iron two-handed sword of parrying in SMC which made for a godly start.

I may also make a video about monks. Just an idea I've been kicking around for a little bit but it's a good excuse to talk about them

    Congratulations on your first win.

While I've read only good things about monks from other people I can't say that I feel comfortable playing them yet not having had a really good run with one so far.

If you can win as a Beastfighter you can certainly win as a Monk

Your post improved my mood a bit. I needed 11 years to achieve my first win and now I see that I'm not alone in the circle of long distance runners.

Congratulations! (especially that monks are not the easiest class)

Thanks! I really appreciate it Glad to hear you mood improved lol.

I think ADOM is one of those games where eventually if you try enough, do you're homework, and slow down once in a while, things eventually click and it all comes together. Case in point, I won three more times as monks of different (tough) races since my first win:

I highly recommend playing monks (or beastfighters) to anyone who may be struggling. While the early game is certainly more challenging, the rest of the game seems extremely fair by comparison.

For me gaining first win in ADOM is like first conquering of the eight thousander. Plenty of climbers have to die, reaching higher and higher stages of the mountain, before at last one will stand on its top.

Great analogy! ADOM definitely fits the bill.
