    Default First win! Agaricus the Gnomish Monk, closed the gate

    Been playing this game for over 15 years and finally got myself a winner!

    My two best runs before this tragically ended both in Water Temple (Dwarven Monk and Dark Elven Beastfighter), but this time I managed to break through until the end.

    Got 4 talents at the start, but no altars at all in the starting dungeons. First kill in Lawenilothlel, beelined for SMC, got the blanket and had downstairs close by. Had to leave Puppy Cave exploration for later because of ants guarding the way down. Didn't feel like I could take on Keethrax yet. Managed to get through UD/HMV with a very paranoid mindset and decided to run straight to Dwarftown as quickly as possibly.

    Thrundarr's first quest was to kill a Caveman. In D:3 I found a Caveman, along with the rune-covered club "Skullcrusher" lying on the ground. It was a huge game changer for me. I ended up using Skullcrusher all the way through the game, switching for unarmed combat only at times for variety and to make sure I wasn't helpless against enemies that can disarm.

    They say Gnomes have a very dark sense of humor. The same can be said about their gods... Berwyn crowned Agaricus as a Champion of Balance, gifting him with the gauntlets of eternal peace "Shezestriakis". I immediately put the gauntlets on without identifying, trusting that items of such divine origin wouldn't be something horrible. I was a bit shocked at first, but I ended up wearing them most of the game as well. The +12 to-hit bonus from Skullcrusher made Shezestriakis feel much less of a burden and actually contribute to my success. I think the DV bonuses and resistances were worth it.

    Had herbs in D:7 below the Big Room, and drank a lot of potions so statwise I was all set by mid-game.

    I had a snack of blink dog corpse already back in the early game, so I was thrilled when I got my first corruption and it was teleportation. Sure, annoying at times, but a huge convenience.

    Not much else to say, after that the game just felt like a breeze. Visited the Pyramid, all the random dungeons and Elemental Temples and the Ice Queen's Domain. I even visited level 50 of Infinite Dungeon just to get the achievement on Steam because I felt like he really could pull it off. Almost hit the 90 days mark since it was fun to explore. I've never played with such a strong character.

    Since it was my first win, I wasn't really sure at all at what kind of power levels people generally tackle whatever obstacles, so I went probably a bit overkill, just in case. Monks seem to be capable of being incredibly powerful late-game. Godly DV, strong capabilities for support spellcasting and unarmed attacks capable of one-shotting all sorts of frightening end-game monsters. There were a few situations where my health plummeted from a lucky critical hit from titans or greater molochs, but I had eaten so many trolls that my health just replenished almost immediately.

    Preserver, braces of war and skull crusher in the same game - if you didn't wear those gauntlets the character would be way to powerful . FYI any armour heavier than 60s removes monk bonuses to speed and DV.

    I thought so as well, but nope, only the DV bonus is negated with armor. Had speed score of 167 even with full plate on. I was switching around between Ancient mummy wrapping + unarmed and heavy armor + shield + Skullcrusher and in the end decided to go with the latter for more PV. Also my DV was actually better with armor and shield equipped, given my skill with the shield.

    While troll corpses help, the fast regen was mainly from preserver+bracers of war who both give very nice regen.
    I don't think I've ever had a rank 15, cool. I guess an early artifact helps.

    Monks are extremely powerful in the late game, especially with two-handers.
    "Hell is empty and all the devils are here."
