    Default Asdf, the trollish wizard

    Hi all,

    Started playing ADOM for the first time in 13 years again this christmas. Played A LOT of 1.1.1 but eventually got bored after becoming very good at scumming and winning was no longer really difficult (thank you andy williams guidebook, adom hof/ forums, rec.games.roguelike.adom etc). It is nice to come back and try the new and improved game, and to see that the community is still very much alive! However, I am not sure how I feel about steam logging how much time I am playing..

    Anyway, I started with trying a bunch of mist elf duelists but all of them died around lvl 10 after ending up in stupid situations I couldn't get out of, one of them even found a quarterstaff of pain and devastation (5d10+6 damage or something) in the SMC at chlvl 1, still died though.

    So I decided to try a trollish wizard. Troll because early game will be fairly easy and wizard because, well, once you get the right spells you can handle pretty much any situation. Before lvl 6 i had fire bolt, frost bolt, acid bolt, acid ball, ice ball and magic missile. found spellbook of heal, cloak of invisibility, teleportation spellbook and blink dog corpse very early as well. precrowned with executor and found morgia roots in UD too. all this lead to a very comfortable game. only problem was I had wasted ridiculous amount of game time searching for Kranach in the wilderness. did rolfs quests, pyramid and portal quest, took out Darkforge (in melee) all without problems. Even cleared the crumbling(?) dungeon with ancient dragons and molochs without too much problem, although I had to be careful. Found a tension room of emperor liches that I decided not to engage

    So I though I would continue by strolling through the ToEF. Didn't really think of what my tactic against the wyrm would be until he was standing beside me, was very unfocused and tired when this happened aswell and manage to cast magic lock instead of magic missile atleast 2 times. Had bolted him down to like 1/3 of his health and thought i would finish him off with ball spells. First round I was critted down to 2 hp, prayed for healing and was crowned (ring of the archmages! would have been fun to use) which surprised me cause I only had the "very close" message last time i offered to the gods (maybe the curse from executor prevents the absolutely close messagee?) fumbled around a couple more rounds with trying to heal aswell as restoring pp with crystals of power and then i was critted again and died. Was just plain stupid and poorly played, would probably have been ok if only I had used some proper precautions like leaving an escape route and bringing more healing potions.... OH well, this is the reason I like the game, you get no second chances

    In my experience, once you get precrowned, you can never get better than "very close" even when you have enough piety to be crowned.

    Hm, that might be the case.. I recently did a postcrown and got the extremely close message though.
