Default I think casters need to have a mana limit. Or at least a cooldown on spells.

It gets a little ridiculous at times.

Come across a Wyrm. It casts darkness.
    I cast light. I take a swing.
    It casts darkness.
    I cast light.
    It casts darkness.
    I cast light.
    It casts darkness.
    I cast light. I take a swing.
    Repeat...

I mean, really, if the darkness is negated, you'd figure it would give up on that spell. It's clearly not going to work.

Monsters can substitute the darkness spell for a melee attack, so it's not a bad strategy for them to keep casting if they have multiple attacks. It may be you who needs to give up on casting light.

Exactly. In fact, that's where an amulet of light or a torch may come in handy

Yeah, I always keep at least two amulets of light in my inventory specifically for those bosses that cast darkness. (I don't recall any normal enemies casting darkness - something to change maybe?)
