I used to play ADOM quite a bit in the mid 2000s and frequented these forums for quite awhile. Haven't played much of the pre-releases past pre69 (or r72 or something)? Decided the other day I'd roll up a new game and give it a try and see what's changed. This is also my first game, IIRC, playing with the tiles as I was always a hardcore ASCII player

Wanted to play it safe, so I rolled a dwarf paladin. Early game was pretty uneventful. Did PC, UD (though I forgot about the SMC blanket and never found one until the Casino), then DD in that order, hit the CoC around level 11. Visited DT, then backtracked up to complete the Pyramid, Graveyard, and one or two of the random caves in around level 16. Crowned myself lawful and got The Wall plus fire immunity. Pretty amazing shield. Weapons were decidedly lacking this game though... I actually used a bloody dagger for like 80% of the game probably. Surprisingly effective even against molochs, great wyrms, diamond golems, etc. Cleared out Darkforge, High Kings. This is pretty much my standard route, except I did the IQD as well. Vault was undead, which I cleared a bit but mostly avoided at that point. Wasn't sure what to do around level 22 so I just did the ToEF, killed Khelly, got Water Orb and pretty much straight dive through to the endgame there, minus a quick visit back to the IQD to clear the greater undead vault. I did find a couple pieces of the antileuvian map, but didn't figure out what I needed to complete. Noted a shrine full of angels but they wouldn't let me in. Was more focused just on seeing if I could go for a win. Will have to play another time to solve the new content. Finished at level 34 using WoD ending in just under 80000 turns.

Amusingly, this was actually my first game on Steam, so I imagine I am one of the few people to ever have the achievement for closing the gate, but not the achievement for getting a first death :P

A few things that I noticed while playing:
-Generally I think the difficulty curve is not as severe as it used to be. There's some stuff to make the early game more forgiving (e.g. potion shop + altar outside CoC... at least, I'm assuming this was guaranteed?).
-Likewise, my intuition for combat stats feels a bit off. At 50 DV/45 PV, I was basically unkillable in most of the middle game, including the ACW. I cleared the greater undead vault in the ice area at like level 24, and I basically wasn't getting hit at all by the ghost lords. Picked up only 6 years unnatural aging for the whole thing. Endgame I was running around with 75/65 or so and never really encountered any serious threats. I feel like maybe there's been some fudging with the effectiveness of stats or enemy crit rates or something.
-I'm impressed how easily I was able to adapt to the tiled interface. I remember it being fairly clunky when it first came out, but it seems pretty slick and fairly intuitive. Looks gorgeous, obviously. For whatever reason the Arrow Keys sometimes get unresponsive, and for whatever reason the drop commands to have been all mixed up (e.g. I couldn't figure out how to drop all items or drop all unID items or whatever, though I never bothered to look up keybindings either).
