    Default First Ultra win, Gray Elf Wizard

    I got my first ever regular win last year, so trying for an ultra next felt like a natural trajectory.

    I've had much recent success with gnomish melee wizards who pump talents into the PV line and use spells mostly just for utility and difficult enemies, while pummeling regular baddies with polearms. I came to realize that those few points of PV don't really matter that much apart from the early game, so I figured I'd just run with a Gray Elf Wizard instead, focusing on the spell talents instead but still mainly use melee and see how it goes.

    This character was pure gold from the start. Leather armor, a spear and a shield all found immediately in the Small Cave to ensure my early game survival. In the Puppy Cave vault I found the Helm of the Watchman which I ended up using pretty much the whole duration of the game. Also Moldy Cave spawned to the spot next to Dwarven Graveyard, where I got both herbs and the Tome of Donors. Did the UD dive, did the Pyramid, basic stuff. Soon afterwards I found the Boots of the Far Wanderer, which likewise I ended up using most of the game.

    Fungoid Overlord dropped skill mushrooms and I got Find Weakness and Courage from them. NICE.

    I had some mid-game scarcity of some important spells and couldn't find an AoLS, but finally found a ring of djinni summoning in a random dungeon and used a wish for the amulet. I had more than enough of useless artifacts to feed the ratling with. Used a ring of doom to find boars and the skull dropped from the first encounter. Similarily a farmer spawned in HMV and got the corpse. Everything went very smoothly, as all the other items I had already.

    I had to manage with crappy polearms for too long, but Skeletal King dropped the Scorched Spear and soon after that I found Scorpion's Sting, which I used until getting the Trident in the end. The real game changer was when I found the Chainmail of the Martyred Crusader in Darkforge. Zero background radiation and I was just free to do as I please.

    Explored the Bug Temple, the Minotaur Maze, Ice Queen's Domain and the Library. Learned Wish but didn't bother with trying for Archmage. Got crowned with Brannalbin's Cloak (which I ended not even using). A great vault just before the end dropped the Sun's Messenger, which I used in the end fight very successfully.

    I found a random wand of wishing with 5 charges and saved it until the end. Ended up wishing for speed twice in the last fight. Used wands of fireballs and slaying arrows to soften up Andor Drakon, and finally going for the kill with the Trident.

    On a side note: The latest Steam version of the game is incredibly unstable. I had more crashes than I could count and had to replay portions of the game which severely decreased my enjoyment for the game and increased the already frustrating grind of going for the ultra. I'm just glad I finally got this over with. I think I'm going to take a small break from this game.

    Congratulations (again, late comment. Replying old 0 reply YAVP-treads because they deserve it). Ultra after 1st win is quite an accomplishment!
