Thread: First complete run through with zero saves

Default First complete run through with zero saves

I have played ADOM for 20 years or so
Have completed a number of times before but even though I have done so with the intention of not reusing saved games I don't think I'd ever managed that before. In summer bought the newest version via Gog. Installed it on older stand alone PC and decided to try to play through in a single run. Have failed spectacularly many times (including being corrupted to the point of death in the Casino while preparing lunch).
Turned of the autosaving to avoid any temptation.
Deliberately used I believe is the easiest combination to complete with :
Female Gnomish Archer born under Raven
I must admit to the following cheat:
By some quirk of fate my stand alone PC's date was August 30th ...

Selected Talents "Strong", "Skilled", "Very Skilled" and "Extremely Skilled"

Set off to the swampland south of Lawin' to kill a Giant Frog
    Found the Goblin Camp
Retrieved the waterblanket and determined the location of the downstairs in the Small Cave
So what I still think off a the most frustrating part of the expedition was complteed successfully
Found a Neutral altar on Jharod's level
Dithered around wilderness/ID/VD until could afford "Detect Traps", "Disarm Traps" and "Pick Locks" from Yergius (this eventually involved abusing Munxip's generosity)
Picked up Teleport Control and Poison Resistance during this

Did early quests up to and including Hotzenplotz, became Lawful
Converted the altar on VD4 to Lawful
At level 14 got two pre-crownings "Potion Belt" (occasionally useful) and "Staff of Wonder" (carefully stored)
Got "Farslayer as Crowning gift and Fire Immunity (that was lucky!)

Found Moldy Dungeon and retrieved "Tome of Donors"
Did Barbarian Quest then led Barbarian to Pyramid leaving Beautiful Clearing as my base camp
Robbed Luuk'Sort using invisibility (Luuk'Sort appears particularly susceptible to this)
I have suggested elsewhere that shopkeepers ought to employ a 'see invisible' assistant after being cleared out once

Explored the other lower danger random dungeons
Got Food Preservation skill off a statue (can't remember which one or what I did - I've not got my head around the statues yet)
Got a Surge of Power on Sinister level 5 and retrieved the "Circlet of the Pure Mind" (nice!)
Visited Dwarftown: just did first quest at this point
Reached level 22/23 and had maxed all my skills (benefit of skilled talents). Used up my eight potions/scrolls of education and got Alchemy, Find Weakness, Cooking, Music and Necromancy, overall I considered this a good outcome.

Visited Ice Queen went Haggar hunting
Surge of Power on FGJC3, retrieved "Nature's Companion" (nicer!)
(my previous incarnation had been confused then slaughtered by a greater vault with Lichs just a few days earlier)
This time greater vault was giants, marginally dull grind but fairly safe for an archer
Retrieved "Robes of the Master Monk" (very nice, change of outfits), "Bracers of Pure Might" (hurrah - one of my favourites), "Hornet's Sting" (nice but I was already mutilating enemies with the "Rune Covered Trident" and was committed to polearms by this point).
One of Haggar's crew dropped the "Tattered Cloak of Souls" (didn't use this).

Was level 28/29 now so used potions of exchange on existing ring collection, got RoDS, used it to get Magical Writing Sets, went to say hello to Boss Minotaur and to retrieved the creator's lighter which he unaccountably lost there. The old Minotaur was a bit parsimonious, 3xPoCC, 1xPoStrength and a spellbook of Knock (in an earlier incarnation he'd given me Thunderstroke and 3xPoGA).

Back to CoC. Saved Khelevaster, turns out I'd forgotten to sanction it with Thundarr first (aaargh!). Had to kill some flavour of Chaos Servant.
    Carried on down to Casino.
An Ancient Black Dragon in a tension room on D28 dropped the "Mail of the Martyred Crusader" (this is just too nice) with that and the bracers background corruption worries are a thing of the past.
Casino turned up next to nothing, fairly measly amount of slaing ammo and one potion of Learning.

Visited Rolf, Corrupted the Stone Heart, reunited the lovers
Stone Dragon King contributed "Quicksilver Bracers" and "Whip of the Vampire Snake"

Greater Vault on D39, Giants again (getting used to it now)
Got "Amulet of Indomitable Life" (very handy) and the "Scorched Spear" (not so much at this stage)
Ploughed on down through the CoC
Killed Yulgash, he didn't summon anything of import, some Chaos Servants (par for course) and some kobolds (are you sure Yulgash ?)
Killed Stone Beast, resurfaced for air and inventory sort.
Used Alchemy to create eleven PoGA, used up everything else I knew about at this stage.
Plunged again, killed Nuurag-Vaarn, Srraxxarrakex and then, rather shamefully Sharad-Waador
Surfaced again, killed Filk, attained level 50 in ID (killed Assassin Prince).
    Got TotRR.
Kept getting offers to allow White Unicorns to accompany ended up leaving five of them in Terinyo
(Are these trainable and could I have used them as companions ?)

Back down to close the gate. Potion of Uselessness generated the "Cloak of Oman" (OK).
    Resurfaced, resorted inventory
    Went for Ultimate dungeon.
Almost died repeatedly here had to keep teleporting back to stairs and running away to heal (at least half a dozen times.
Eventually annihilated everything on the level.
Collected the SoO, went home, lived happily ever after.

Apparently my most numerous victims were Gremlins (330) I really don't remember those !
I unearthed 54 Artefacts although I never noticed "Nature's Breath" or "Purifier" so I guess they are still sitting on the floor somewhere.
Apparently I played for over 2726 hours ! (Ancardia time obviously)
I guess I'll have to try again with a more difficult build, Farmer ? Merchant ?

I can't work out how to use the Code Tags to insert my .flg file ?
Doesn't matter really but I ought to learn sometime

    Code:

    Congratulations!

You can use code tags as follows:

    [C0DE]
-insert flag file (maybe edit out some boring stuff)-
    [/C0DE]

But replace the 0 in C0DE with an O. If you would like to post your full .flg file, you will have to cut it into parts to avoid the maximum character limit for a post.

Unicorns can't be tamed as far as I know, although you could maybe get one from a scroll of familiar summoning.

Creating 11 poga from alchemy is quite a lot, do you remember the recipe?

Yeah those are considered as the more difficult classes, along with thieves. Mist elves are challenging to play as well, as are chaos knights, in their own way.

You steal a scroll labelled HITME. The orc hits you.

    Default Thanks Grobblewobble

I think I've inserted the code correctly
The recipe was PoCC + PoLongevity = PoGA
Another recipe was PoRawMana + Stomafillia = PoLongevity
So I was limited by my PoCC (Ice Queen, Minotaur, Corpses, other sundry)

Nice! I have finally won without restoring saves after a death (i.e. no save scumming), but no way I could do it without ever closing the software. Does that mean, incidentally, that you completed a playthrough without the software crashing even once?

Yes it does. The more recent versions are definitely much more reliable. Have started another, a Mist Elf Farmer born under Sword
