I might have the opposite problem. I prefer an iron girdle [+0,+1] over a girdle of carrying. Also because I know girdles of carrying will kill me. A hag *will* curse it if my characters wear them. I never cast SoA either; I know I will end up refreshing the spell too late and be crushed.
Iron weapons and armor that could have good modifiers I leave behind, unless the basic item is an immediate upgrade. Can't remember the last time I picked up the strange item.

Actually I think the monster I love most is the gelatinous cube, because it will clean up some of the piles of trash that the game is generating.

grobble, you need to master emergency equipment dump. Not only does it save you when SoA is running out or a hag is trying to grab your balls and accidentally touches your girdle, it also frequently distracts dangerous monsters while they pick up the choicest pieces.

Can’t remember the last time I had a character cursed by a hag or other caster. Mainly because I hoard unlimited ammo of all types and shoot the bastards in the face until they’re dead! Ahhhhhh! (That’s my wimpy mist elf berserker shout)

I'd be more worried about a random fireball or acid trap burning/melting the girdle away. In some circumstances that might be as deadly as having it cursed.
As for ranged attacks, nothing discourages nasties like a blast from a wand of death.
I guess wands of fire or magic missiles work just as well in the early game.

The fireball trap is why you test your CC from time to time.

Drop everything, take off the girdle.
Then only pick up till you get overburdened. Put the belt on, and you are back to unencumbered usually.

I had a wizard with super high mana once who picked up everything in 2 GDV’s and became strained! With a girdle of carrying and SoA spell on infinite. Also had all the carrying talents. That’s probably taking pack ratting slightly too far.

Just walked out of Ancardia with a closed gate, and a CC fairly large.

That dwarf was just waiting until he was no longer under your control.
