Piety cost when dropping on altars?

Does it cost piety to drop things onto altars for detection, even if they are already identified?

I tend to just run up to them and drop my entire inventory instead of sorting through to find the 3 or 4 items I actually need checked/water changed holy. I tend to get pretty large inventories and wondering if its 'costing' me piety every time I do it.

Does it cost to make holy water? I know you have to have a certain level for your god to convert it for you, but do I lose some when that happens?
