    Default Experienced vortices are bad

Had a relatively nice run with a mist elven wizard - I intended to build an archmage and eventually roll 6000 in-game years for a theory on scroll of omnipotence.
So I did the PC, DD, UD, farmed plenty of herbs, collected some PV, spells, potions.
Had a pulsing surge of power on PC2, which turned out to be the vampire snake but never got around to picking it up.
Griffyard had seven treasure graves but the first one yielded a lich king so I had to bail.
Precrown gave me the robe of the master monk and here's the root of my problems and eventual demise.
Went to R4, just to clear it, collect loot, get some scrolls from the guaranteed shop.
Enter level 8 - a river and a mixed threat room.
As we all know, that latter part can be tricky.
Sure enough, there's an annihilator, stone giant lord, diamond fucking golem and... a green V.
I teleported around, messed with the staff of parting water and the wand of digging, preparing corridors for my magic missiles.
The acid vortex emerges but I'm like, hey I'm 79 hp, I ate some ants and I have the robe.
Blasted it twice with magic missile before it reached melee range, then decided to dispatch it with a fireball that I've trained somewhat since the beginning.
What I did not account for was the experience level of the vortex and by extension - it's HP pool.
Fireball barely takes it to half hp, then it goes poof and drops me from 79 to -34 in one blast
Turns out the robe provides protection from fire, cold and shock but... not from acid.
The ants I ate apparently didn't give me the intrinsic either.
Best of all - I had the revelation spell, all I had to do was cast it and check for the resistance then just keep the vortex at a distance.

For real. I consider vortices to be, essentially, the Mist Elf racial nemesis. Though dragon breath is also not fun.

I understand the 6000 year part; is the archmage necessary for the same idea or is that part of an other Scroll theory?

One wonders how an acid vortex gains experience? Is there some strange ecology where they explode and kill things then return to life some time later more experienced than before?

Mist elves can take care of vortices quite well with lumps of clay.
You command the homunculus to slay the acid vortex.
    *poof*
gremlin - karmic lizard, dark orc, acid vortex, staring eye - dragon turtle, fairy dragon, ogre lord, minotaur emperor - pit viper, orc butcher - greater mimic, dark elven wizard, carrion crawler, dwarven child - imp - ochre jelly, dark elven archer, king cobra, goodwife - kobold shaman, magebane eye, floating eye, quickling king - giant centipede, hill orc sergeant, mimic hivemind, greater claw bug, brown bear, large gnoll - giant bee queen, giant ant warrior, shadow centipede, kobold

Had an acid vortex guarding an artifact once. Three construct slaying arrows and still 'slightly damaged', then BOOM 200+ damage and death.

Archmage opens up a number of choices later on and evens out the playing field when the character is maxed out.
Plus, I need a good way to spend the remaining 5999 years. Wishing for boots of slow shuffle, reducing speed with spells etc to roam the wilderness and pass the time.
I mean, the only reasonable thing to do when attempting to figure out the scroll of omnipotence is to become an archmage, just to kill several birds with one stone, as I attempt ever more bizarre ways to read it.

Just passed Casino with a ME wizard (who, incidentally, had to rob the casino bc Mana Battery = owed more money than I happened to be carrying, which I felt silly about) who has the weird firestarter and assorted map fragments, so we'll see if he dies in foolish fashion or contributes to this knowledge.
