I tend to find quest monsters when I immediately go to the next level of the CoC after Dwarftown.

Yesterday it happened again, I got a chaos plague bearer (not very rare but not very common either) and it was one of the first monsters I saw in the next level. So, although this is by no means tested, I advise you to always try that.

(a pity that that char got a "sounds muffled" room in the very same level and was horribly instakilled by a gray slayer because I didn't know what the room did - I don't remember ever having found such a room before, they must be quite rare).

If you really can't find one, you could try the carnivorous (spelling?) dungeons before the level of the High Kings.
You steal a scroll labelled HITME. The orc hits you.

If you haven't pacified the big room you can try and farm some herbs there while killing monsters.. A stone statue might even show up eventually.

I believe they are too advanced to turn up in the big room. Unless generated by a "you feel a certain danger" out-of-depth message. Keep looking below dwarftown, or in the ToHK. Last place should be okay for exp and items too.

Yeah, it might be so that the danger levels don't match with big room and stone statue. But the general idea I go by is that always try to combine the monster quest with something usefull, ie mining, herbing or general stat leveling. One might get lucky and have some nice herb patterns below dwarftown too

That explains it! Somehow I managed to misread this term consistently.

The Cavern grins wickedly as you descend the stairs.
The Cavern suddenly writhes towards you.
The Cavern grabs a hold of your leg with its reaching tentacles.
    You die of pure fright.
