How to plant trees?

I have managed to plant herbs, but plant seeds only give a message "You plant the seed and hope the best." and nothing seems to happen even in long time. Not that it would be very useful, but I would like to plant trees. Plant seeds make trees, right? How to plant them?

Plant seeds do not grow anything. They are for eating only.
There is a dungeon level with plenty of trees, and they can be found in forests wilderness-squares easily enough.

You are confusing this with bards tale III, where you planter "an acorn" and watered it with "water of life" to grow a tree. Or something suchlike.

Only farmers at level 25+ with special class power (always pick best herbs etc) can make cabbage out of them plant seeds. And what use they would have for more food at this point is beyond me.
