Default Race Wars - The Armies of Order

Tiny, the hurthling beastfighter, saved the world with his brave efforts and
became a great ruler while saving himself 16 times.

The following races are at your disposal: Hurthlings, High Elves, Dwarves
You may call upon the warriors of any of these races, as many times as you wish, or not at all.

Utilize this thread as a method of discussing strategy, posting .svgs to pass along, and recording information so that the other members of your team know where useful locations, objects, and dungeon features are.

I will browse this thread daily and post summaries and updates of your heroes in this first post, so any of the vile opponents may know the power of the forces of Law!

Most of our classes have some meat on their bones, and so do our
races. Considering the availability of the speed talents, I think
that at least 3 victories are within our grasp. For any of our race/
class combos, I highly advise skipping the 'treasure hunter' talent.
I would say speed first, and PV second. To achieve the 'immune to
pain' talent, one only needs 'hardy', 'tough skin', 'iron skin', and
have Wi and To stats at or above 15. Most of our PC's should be
ellegible for that with little trouble, and healers right from the
    start.

Regarding our races, here is some info from the guidebook:
    Code:
Dwarves - Climbing, Detect Traps, Smithing Metallurgy, Mining
St Le Wi Dx To Ch Ap Ma Pe Total
    12 11 11 9 13 9 9 10 11 + 5

Hurthlings - Stealth Archery, Cooking, Food Preservation, Gardening
     6 10 10 15 12 12 10 8 10 + 3

High Elf - Listening, Literacy, Stealth Dodge
    10 13 9 15 8 10 14 13 14 +16
I consider hurthlings to be the best of the lot. They beat dwarves
big in the De stat, and the St stat is easily trained by simply 'w5'ing
on the top line of the Terinyo map, while carrying some large rations.
They start with the 'thrown rocks' skill already trained, and rocks
are the most plentiful ammo in the early game. Remember to milk
every goblin rock thrower you find : ) They also have the 'archery'
and 'food preservation' skills, which are two of the best skills in
    the game.

Dwarves have their virtues though, with detect traps and excellent
shop prices. Also, if one plans to exploit mining, this is a good
choice. In my experience, they also tend to start with better than
average gear, so there might be a survival advantage there as well.
I think they lack magical talent though, so I would recomend not
chosing them for spellcasters, unless you want to put in a lot of
work to raise their Le stat.

High elves are for those that fear no stone block traps. *grumble*

Overall, I think we have some powerful classes here, and as long as
we avoid deathtraps (like staying too long in the SMC, and trying
deep puppy cave levels), we should win this challenge handily. A few
thoughts for increasing win percentages (add to these if you think of
    some):

Slay a common monster as a first kill, and record it via the '&'
command. This will make getting the 'courage' skill easier. Bandits
are an OK choice, but any orc/rat will do.

Get a crowning early, as it gives an immunity, an artifact, and an
amulet. We can't switch alignment anyway, so there is only benefit.

We won't have the same corruption problems as the chaos goofs,
because of our white unicorn access. Feel free to take your time,
mining, smithing or traveling the wilderness. Even leaving the chain
with heavy corruption is an option, as no points are deducted for
that. We can use the unicorns services any time we want.

The PC:2 ants will provide unlimited ammo in the form of rocks, and
you don't have to be super tough to get some. Hurthlings have a big
    advantage here.

You can save at any time, so if you are in a tough spot (poisoned
or whatever), consider saving the game and passing it on to some
    other sucker : )

You start with two prayers, and they are your friends : )

Early game herbs can often be found in the DDL, so it's worth a look.

We must collect many bones in our games. because if a hostile blink
dog (like from a tension room) summons, it will kill our alignment,
and therefore us. You can kill some BD's, just be careful about your
alignment. Maybe kill some, and if you don't get a corpse quick,
leave and come back later to kill some more.

The wand of teleport can be aquired as soon as you have TP control +
magic mapping, or item detection. If these are not available, it's still
worth getting as soon as you have a means of digging. Even without
TP control, the wand can still save your life.

That's all I can think of for now.

I consider the farmer to be the suckiest class in the group, so I will
volunteer to be the sucker that plays it. I will probably chose a dwarf,
as hurthling's skills overlap too much.

I've now got a Salamander-born male Dwarf Paladin. I dropped the Sheriff in the Outlaw Town to get the Amulet of Order, then jumped into the PC to make a first kill (giant rat). I'm thinking of grabbing some rocks from PC:2 to train St and since I have Healing already, I'm wondering at what level I should hit the Druid's dungeon to get myself a guaranteed Frost Bolt tome.

Well, I rolled our farmer. I gave him the 'quick' and 'very quick' talents,
and named him Thrundaar jr. Let's see if he lives to be as old as senior : )

You ever feel like pulling your hair out? I think this is becoming a trend
for me, to die in record time to the stupidest deaths in these challenge
games. I entered the SMC and killed a few monsters, I decided not to go for
the blanket though, for fear of gaining too many exp. levels on the way.

I head for the VD, and easily kill the monsters there until I hit exp. level
    3. I chose the 'long stride' talent, as 'greased lightning' requires De at
    15. I venture down to VD 2. I hit a pit viper trap about 20 steps away from
the stairs, and it's in a tunnel to boot, so I can't even try to flee. The
dog dies, and I have to kill one of the vipers to make a break for it. I get
poisoned, poisoned, poisoned, so I pray, pray, pray.

I had no illusions of playing with the 'no pray' restriction with this PC,
but I may as well have, for all the good it did me. The poison was taking
~10 HP's per spasm, and I was dead quick. I refuse to generate any more PC's.
I'll play other PC's after others get done with their turns, but for me to
start another is just a bloodbath waiting to happen. I can't help but feel
that Grey is to blame... somehow : )

I was going to start a dwarven beastfighter, as their skill sets compliment each other nicely. With two dwarfs already generated, though, it'll have to wait. I think I'll go with a hurthling healer instead.

The bard character is an interesting one. High elves are best suited for it, but hurthlings are guaranteed the heir gift.

Even though we can't get an ultra ending, we can still get the trident if we want to. It's not going to be worth it, as the game can easily be completed without it at that point, but if someone wants an extra challenge...

Our hurthling healer turned out to be born in the month of tree as a female. I named her Florence. Starting stats were relatively good, except for strength, which was 7.

First kill was a rat on PC1. I had to be very aggressive to hit it. I soon found a 1d6+5 axe, though, which is very nice at this stage. Generated SMC, but didn't investigate it. Killed some monsters in the outlaw village for XP and took a look in the shop. A fireproof blanket was the best item for sale. Left when a beggar started attacking Florence. Cleared ID1 to reach level 6 and went to investigate the eastern dungeons more closely. There's a river blocking the path in early DD and we have no waterproof blanket. Same thing on PC2. After waiting for a while, the ants broke through. I can deal with the workers, but the warriors are probably too tough at the moment. I came across a blink dog, which I took with me back to PC1.

The biggest problem for now is our lack of equipment. The only thing protecting us is a [+1, +0] cloak. We have 0 PV. There's a [+2, +1] blood-stained robe for sale in the shop, but we're pretty much broke. A shield would be great. Maybe I should have gone for the PV talents, but instead picked Alert (Treasure Hunter should get us some extra spellbooks at some point), Quick, Careful and Defensive Fighter. Our strength is maxed out at 11.

I'm such an idiot at times. I killed all the ants, but the stairs were on the other side of the river. On the way back through PC1, I came across a couple of monsters in a corridor. Figuring that they were no match for me at this point, I just went right at them. A berserker was easily killed in two turns.

"You miss the homunculus. The homunculus hits you. You suddenly fall asleep!"

Oops! The message buffer shows about three pages of Zzzzzhhh and attacks by various monsters, who squeeze by each other to take turns hitting me. Finally, a lizard man delivers the final blow. The end.

Florence, the hurthling healer, reached level 8 and scored 4922 points.

He brought back joy into the life of a tiny girl.
I had to tame a cave lion in the DD, and the cat got the final blow on the
Keethrax. I still got the rewards though, the 'herbalism' skill, and a
    'mottled' potion.

I found nothing spectacular in the DD, but I didn't explore the levels fully,
as I was afraid of pit vipers and stone block traps. There were blink dogs on
PC:1 so I tamed them and left them there. I let the ants dig out most of PC:2,
so there are plenty of rocks and ore there, if anyone wants to pack them to a
shop. There was an herb patch on PC:3 and it was morgia and pepper petal. The
Rune Covered Sling was generated on PC:6, and the Black Torc of course, so
precrowning might be difficult. I also aquired the 'very quick', 'greased
lightning', and 'hardy' talents. With two more points of Wi, we will be elegible
for the 'immune to pain' talent.

I am really surprised at the power of hurthling bards. It's like playing an
archer that starts with 7LB's! No fear of cats, and there are plenty of slav-
I mean pets to lower the threat of paralyzers and some stray vortex.

Tasks accomplished: -acid, herbalism, unlimited ammo, and morgia.

Tasks for the future: Get TP control from PC:1, get -poison from somewhere,
kill Hotz and gang (careful of alignment), head west, or whatever else anyone
    wants.

EDIT: I should probably include the save file.

"Whip me!" pleads the adom player. The rng replies... "No."
