Countless newbies hast suffered a fiery death in ToEF.
but for me it was the corpse of the guardian. i ate it accidentically and got poisoned hands.
Not instantaneously but a slow death. Yay for no scrolls or potions.

No thick gauntlets? I rarely have any lack of them except in the early game. And there are guaranteed scrolls of chaos resistance available - some may start cursed, but there are other scrolls to help with that.

Also, holy water potions can bless even the cursed ?oCRs, allowing them to take off 1.6 corruptions.

Sadly, without the think gauntlets the holy water would be poison before you could say @#$%!

he propably left his thick gauntlets somewhere safe, as they could burn in the TEF - he didn't plan on munching that ACW

A few days ago I managed to get the fire orb second time ever. But I didn't eat the corpse. I got sacced by a fire demon on the elemental altar. Like so often: you are doing very well and one moment you notice you have suddenly died. It's not like "Now I am in a difficult place. I might die.". Everything you can do is to stare the screen as long as it takes you to realize there is not return, your mighty hero really is dead...

I feel for ya. I was doing really good in a game (got the water orb, fire orb, RotHK) and 2 levels after the casino, i got owned by a quickling queen >_<
