    Default Perfect-looking full screen ADOM in Vista.

    Here are the steps:
    1. Download DosBox and install to it's default folder.

    2. Edit the file entitled dosbox.conf in the following ways:

    fullscreen=true
    fullresolution=640x480

    3. Create a shortcut to Dosbox.exe, name it ADOM, and edit
    it's properties in the following way:

    In the 'target' field of the properties menu, replace what is
    in the field with this line:

    "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.exe" -conf "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.conf" "c:\adom111\adom.exe"

    That is assuming you have your dos version of ADOM installed in
    the c:\adom111 directory.

    4. Put the shortcut on your desktop, where it belongs : )

    5. Cut and paste the following info into a text file.

    -------------------------------------

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\RasterFonts]
    "woafont"="dosapp.fon"
    "CGA40WOA.FON"="CGA40WOA.FON"
    "CGA80WOA.FON"="CGA80WOA.FON"
    "EGA40WOA.FON"="EGA40WOA.FON"
    "EGA80WOA.FON"="EGA80WOA.FON"

    -------------------------------------

    Open regedit, manually navigate to the proper key, and
    simply change the appropriate line to:

    "woafont"="dosapp.fon"

    as that's the only one that matters.

    6. Open a console window by typing the word 'command' at
    the 'start' menu. Right click on the window, select 'properties',
    select 'font', and change the default font from 'Lucida' to
    Raster font.

    7. Reboot.

    8. Here is the annoying part : (
    I was unable to find any way to achieve the proper aspect ratio
    to run ADOM perfectly through software alone. The user must
    unfortunately deal with tedious button pressing on their monitor
    to adjust the horizontal size of the display. Otherwise the
    ASCII characters will look squished. According to your video card,
    and drivers though, you may well be able to adjust your own monitors
    vertical size settings through software alone.

    If you have done everything properly, you should be able to get
    ADOM to look perfect on Vista, without having to deal with any
    vertual machines or anything.

    Thanks for the advice, gut.. however, strangely I must add, that I never had a problem running adom in fullscreen on vista with dosbox... have I missed sth?

    I haven't experienced problems, just imperfections.
    Font type is a small thing for most people I suppose,
    but for those like me, playing ADOM with 'Lucida'
    fonts is an abomination. Also, I suppose some graphics
    cards support more resolution modes than others, so
    perhaps that is why I had such trouble with my ASCII
    characters appearing slightly squished.

    I always play ADOM in Lucida on XP - I think it looks quite nice personally, and certainly a lot better than the clunky looking default font.

    but don#t you like the standard DOSBOX fonts ? As an old dos user, I think it is the nicest form of having the computer running anyway - sometimes I run linux in command line mode only, as I like this very nice, basic, easy non-fancy fonts... and apparently neither word nor windows have it - what's it's name?

    BTW, is there a way in linux, to maximize a console to full screen? Does adom run on linux in textmode?

    In Linux, you can press ctrl+alt+F2 to login in text mode (press ctrl+alt+F7 to return to the X session). And yes, I just tested it, and ADOM seems to run fine in text mode.

    > but don#t you like the standard DOSBOX fonts

    The standard font for my DOSBOX installation was
    far too round and fluffy for my taste : ) Maybe
    it's different for different systems, I don't know.

    > As an old dos user [...] I like this very nice, basic, easy non-fancy fonts

    I'm with you, and that's exactly the look I was
    trying to get in vista. It took me forever to figure
    out how to get it though, so when I was finished, I
    posted the steps.

    > apparently neither word nor windows have it - what's it's name?

    To the best of my knowledge, it's called dosapp.fon for windows,
    I have no idea about linux. That was the major malfunction for me,
    as that particular font happens to be one that is hidden by vista/xp
    installations. Simply enabling the 'show hidden files' setting is not
    enough to have it show up in your fonts folder. You must open a
    console and type the command 'dir /p' to see it.

    > I always play ADOM in Lucida on XP

    If I had not spent so many years playing ADOM with the dosapp.fon
    appearance, I'm sure I would have been perfectly happy with Lucida.
    I like the pure dos look though, and I'm too stubborn to change : )

    I was reading this and thought the same.. I've had my share of problems with Vista and games but Dosbox + ADOM worked out perfectly and was really easy to set up

    I think we should all post screenshots of what ADOM looks like on our systems so we at least knew what the hell we're comparing. Just need to choose a standard-ish area - say Terinyo after wandering around it with a starting char?

    No need to go through Terinyo, on my installation the
    title screen is enough to show the abomination that is
    refered to as Ludica. If anyone out there in ADOM-land
    prefers the bottom image to the top, I'd be amazed.
    The top image shows proper dosapp.fon ASCII characters,
    while the bottom image shows Lucida in all of its gory.

    Of course this may be a situation that is unique to my
    machine for some reason, and if so, I apologize for wasting
    everyone's time : )
