    Default Perfect-looking full screen ADOM in Vista.

    Here are the steps:
    1. Download DosBox and install to it's default folder.

    2. Edit the file entitled dosbox.conf in the following ways:

    fullscreen=true
    fullresolution=640x480

    3. Create a shortcut to Dosbox.exe, name it ADOM, and edit
    it's properties in the following way:

    In the 'target' field of the properties menu, replace what is
    in the field with this line:

    "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.exe" -conf "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.conf" "c:\adom111\adom.exe"

    That is assuming you have your dos version of ADOM installed in
    the c:\adom111 directory.

    4. Put the shortcut on your desktop, where it belongs : )

    5. Cut and paste the following info into a text file.

    -------------------------------------

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\RasterFonts]
    "woafont"="dosapp.fon"
    "CGA40WOA.FON"="CGA40WOA.FON"
    "CGA80WOA.FON"="CGA80WOA.FON"
    "EGA40WOA.FON"="EGA40WOA.FON"
    "EGA80WOA.FON"="EGA80WOA.FON"

    -------------------------------------

    Open regedit, manually navigate to the proper key, and
    simply change the appropriate line to:

    "woafont"="dosapp.fon"

    as that's the only one that matters.

    6. Open a console window by typing the word 'command' at
    the 'start' menu. Right click on the window, select 'properties',
    select 'font', and change the default font from 'Lucida' to
    Raster font.

    7. Reboot.

    8. Here is the annoying part : (
    I was unable to find any way to achieve the proper aspect ratio
    to run ADOM perfectly through software alone. The user must
    unfortunately deal with tedious button pressing on their monitor
    to adjust the horizontal size of the display. Otherwise the
    ASCII characters will look squished. According to your video card,
    and drivers though, you may well be able to adjust your own monitors
    vertical size settings through software alone.

    If you have done everything properly, you should be able to get
    ADOM to look perfect on Vista, without having to deal with any
    vertual machines or anything.

    "Whip me!" pleads the adom player. The rng replies... "No."

    I haven't experienced problems, just imperfections.
    Font type is a small thing for most people I suppose,
    but for those like me, playing ADOM with 'Lucida'
    fonts is an abomination. Also, I suppose some graphics
    cards support more resolution modes than others, so
    perhaps that is why I had such trouble with my ASCII
    characters appearing slightly squished.

    I always play ADOM in Lucida on XP - I think it looks quite nice personally, and certainly a lot better than the clunky looking default font.

    but don#t you like the standard DOSBOX fonts ? As an old dos user, I think it is the nicest form of having the computer running anyway - sometimes I run linux in command line mode only, as I like this very nice, basic, easy non-fancy fonts... and apparently neither word nor windows have it - what's it's name?

    BTW, is there a way in linux, to maximize a console to full screen? Does adom run on linux in textmode?

    In Linux, you can press ctrl+alt+F2 to login in text mode (press ctrl+alt+F7 to return to the X session). And yes, I just tested it, and ADOM seems to run fine in text mode.

    When playing ADOM on Windows XP, I found that the best way to get a good, oldschool-looking, robust, full screen (or windowed) ADOM was to run the Linux Version through ADOM Sage.

    Now, Windows Vista does not allow one to use good fonts or to go full screen. So, I suppose the best way to run ADOM Sage is to use my new utility cons2tcod. I have not tested it well, though.

    Sorry for reviving an old thread.

    Mother of god, I don't know how some of you folks play with those fonts! I've attached a screenshot of mine, I always thought it looked like this for everyone. I didn't do any mucking with it after I downloaded the client, so I figured it was the default.

    How do you change your fonts anyway? I'm interested in a little experimentation.

    Edit: image resolution got all wanked up when i uploaded, image is here: http://i.imgur.com/eMV1D.png
