Thread: Perfect-looking full screen ADOM in Vista.

    Well I'd love to play on the server.. but i just cannot handle font/running it in a WINDOW. I need fullscreen, and that oldschool, hardcore DOS-font ;D Honestly.. one time after I had played on the server for a while and I returned to my DOS-emulated, fullscreen ADOM, I got a hard-on. Then again that happens alot of times when I play ADOM.

    I'm talking about the registry editing I heard about. I'd like to set Courier New or Andale Mono as my ADOM font, and see how that feels to me.

    > Gut, I'd like to know how you managed to set this font.

    Just follow the steps in the OP : ) That's why I started this
    thread, because it was so cumbersome to get the look I have
    used for nearly a decade.

    > my console didnt give me enough options.

    Frustrating, isn't it? Personally, I think it's a bit much for
    an OS to force users to edit thier registry in order to get the
    look they like in a console. I suppose they just don't understand
    how many PC users still like the old games, and can be picky about
    how they look.

    > I'm talking about the registry editing I heard about. I'd like to set Courier

    Oh. Due to my room-temperature IQ, I naturally assumed that everyone
    would like to use dosapp.fon. Searching the c:\windows\fonts folder,
    and checking the properties of courrier new, I see the name for it
    is cour.ttf. I didn't have one called Andele Mono, but I had Andalus.
    It's name was andlso.ttf. I assume all one would have to do is start
    regedit, and manually make the following changes:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\GRE_Initialize\LargeFont]
    "FIXEDFON.FON"="8514fix.fon"
    "FONTS.FON"="8514sys.fon"
    "OEMFONT.FON"="8514oem.fon"

    change "OEMFONT.FON"="8514oem.fon"
    to "OEMFONT.FON"="cour.ttf"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\ Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\RasterFonts]
    "woafont"="dosapp.fon"
    "CGA40WOA.FON"="CGA40WOA.FON"
    "CGA80WOA.FON"="CGA80WOA.FON"
    "EGA40WOA.FON"="EGA40WOA.FON"
    "EGA80WOA.FON"="EGA80WOA.FON"

    change "woafont"="dosapp.fon" to "woafont"="cour.ttf"

    That should do it, but I didn't test it myself. I didn't feel like
    rebooting my machine, which is mandatory for the changes to take
    effect. You should backup your registry before fiddling with it
    though. Even simply exporting the single key is enough, and what
    I always do before playing.

    > gut's font seems the same as my default font,

    Oh, how I wish it would have been MY default font!

    > but has no resizing options

    You lost me there, plenty of resizing options on mine : )

    Huh, you guys all play with really weird ugly fonts =\

    This is the only font I've ever known and played with, and I like it. The colours are much brighter though, because of the jpg compression.

    That does look pretty similar to the font I
    use now. I wonder what the name of yours
    is.

    No idea, it's the default on both my desktop and laptop, both run Windows XP and the winbeta version of ADOM.

    As far as I know, there are only two valid console fonts that come in Windows installs: the old-school DOS font and Lucida. So you are very likely using one of those.

    The vast majority of true type fonts are not usable for the console, an interesting explanation can be found here: http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/ar...6/2659903.aspx

    I personally use Lucida for ADOM, using ClearType (I use it for everything) and the largest font size that my screen will allow, without going into fullscreen mode (not because I don't like how fullscreen mode looks, but because I want to have instant access to the other windows). It looks great to me this way.

    The screenshots in Conundrum's post are from the WinBeta version, not the DOS one. It seems to use the Courier New font.

    the bottom one is what mine looks like while running sage, never really bothered me all that much though.
    To this day I have not once scummed in ADOM.
    Probably why I dont have a win.
