    >ranged classes have a huge advantage in the game?

In ADOM version 1.1.1 they do. In versions 1.0.0 and
earlier though, melee guys were not so crippled as
they are now. You could melee the entire ToEF's cast
as a merchant and not even have to worry too much.

It does, but I don't think large rations can be smithed.
You steal a scroll labelled HITME. The orc hits you.

    You think wrongly : )
That is one of the more hilarious things in ADOM.

Heh, you can smith large rations? Anyway in my post I was thinking about a starting weapon challenge, supposing that the starting weapon is actually a weapon.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Personally, I'd say it's bad. ADOM 1.1.1 is very unbalanced, IMO. I have pretty much given up on it for "playing for fun", except perhaps for wizards. Melee classes are pretty much a non-starter.

The earlier gammas, g10, g16p2, are better balanced.

Are there big differences in those earlier gammas?

Monster berserking is possibly the worst thing in 1.1.1 for the melee classes. Overall there's not that much difference though, and even in the older gammas there was a big imbalance between wizards/archers and the other classes.

Gotta disagree. Ars holds the record for a melee speedrun, and
    it's under 20,000 turns. I think if one removes a wizard's ability
to use teleportation his primary means of transportation, they
are about even. I think it's more about a player's attitude toward
    grinding.

I don't like grinding. It's boring. If you don't play ADoM for fun, why do you play it? *watches in horror*
The RNG is the source of chaos and corruption.
