I love killing my first cat. At first I curse under my breath but Cat Lord is just a boss and Cat Ring is just an artifact and now I can finally shoot those wands of farslaying into mixed tension rooms with a grin on my face. It's really a lot of stress taken out of the game once that first cat dies.
I said it before, and I'll say it again. If I knew scripture like you, I'd prolly be an athiest too.. -gut

Maybe i just have been lucky. But it is getting a lot easier to not kill cats recently.

At first i tried several drakish assassins for the music skill but the few times i didn't kill a cat i ended up dying somewhere. Then i went gnomish and made seldom use of ventriloquism to help me lock them in somewhere and I was very successful with that.

The most important thing is zapping monster detection when you encounter a vault or tension room, and using the 'w'alk command...always. If you find a cat like this, you can only kill it if you are playing in the dark while drunk =P

Of course, sometimes it cannot be helped. Locked in between two cats with no tele/PoEx etc...

But nearly all the times i killed cats it happened while I was precrowning in a low DL level and didn't use the 'w'alk command when luring monsters.

Also, a strategy that few use. After you explore a level, lock all doors that you won't use to walk between stairs. I usually have D: 1 to 16 pacified this way in all my games, and that's where you are most likely to run into a cat. You don't even have to lure worms or jellies into rooms, just lock it and most monster generation will happen there. Eventually there will be enough monsters on the level so that your way will always be clear.

Having pick locks and getting thieves picks is obviously a big help with that. And that's one of the reasons i really really like thieves. they can AVOID danger a lot better than most classes, and they can do it from lvl 1. But anyone can get pick locks and TPicks, so I really recommend it.

Even then there is a slight chance: you choose a weak attack (f.e. "kick" ) and hope that one of the two cats gets frightened before You kill her.

There are all other sorts of wonderful ways to make cats wander off. If I am 100% certain I want to go through all the effort to not kill a cat, I'll throw a potion of blindness at them if needed; simply because if I don't kill that cat, then I don't need to hope the RNG doesn't destroy it before I get to Cat Lord because that's when I'd really need it.

Since we're off-topic already, I might as well share my favorite low-tech way to get rid of cats here.

Step one: get the cat and something that isn't dangerous, probably won't drop items, and that you're fine with killing into the same small room. Here I use a hobgoblin, which isn't ideal because of the item drop chance.
    Code:

                                                             ############

Step 2: step out of the room such that the non-cat is blocking the only doorway. This may take a few tries.

If that didn't kill the non-cat, repeat steps 3 and 4 (remember to use your tactics settings!) until it does.

Step 5: close the door on the now not-your-problem-until-someone-opens-it door! Lock it if you can. If you can't, just try not to spend too much time on the level.
    Code:
    You close the door.

Congratulations, you've just dealt (possibly temporarily) with a cat you can't outrun with no inventory use!

Of course, if you have a wand of trap creation, that's a foolproof way to (if you lead them over it enough) safely kill them. The manual lies when it says that PC-created traps count as cat kills.

EDIT: sorry about the question-mark tiles, comes from using the sage option for dot-instead-of-period tiles. Don't think it detracts from the technique.

    You mean non-cat?
You hit Andor Drakon, the ElDeR cHaOs GoD, and severely wound him.
The greater balor summons some help!

Er, yes. Oops. I blame the genocidal instincts hammered into me by years of avoiding killing them. My current PC, who ended up kicking a cat to death early while trying to make it run (trapped in a long corridor between two, just bad luck) has about twenty cat kills, and I'm considering starting a wish engine just so I can wish for cats a few thousand times and boost that. I. Don't. Like. Them.
