Appraising has long been a worthless skill and the same general effect can be reproduced by checking how much a merchant NPC will buy unidentified items for. Could this skill be saved? What do you think.

I kinda like it. Every once in a while you get to safely equip a nice item sooner than you otherwise would be able to. Not that exciting, but it sometimes makes the early game easier, which is pretty good as far as skills go.
Maybe by knowing the value of items it should give you better prices when buying/selling, or maybe boost the effectiveness of haggling.

It is a worthless skill that maybe might help once every 100 games or so.

Well, that's definitely not my experience. I've had it find me +4 PV hats when I was true berserk and thus couldn't afford to put on potentially cursed armor pieces, plenty of times it finds cursed weapons that no longer need to be carried around. I don't have 100 recorded games where I have the skill, but I'm sure I'd be able to find a few clips of it being useful.
