New character started. Fuck archers, I kind of enjoyed being underpowered. Time to play a candle female gnomish assassin. The rules prohibiting praying and missiles remain lifted, the others go back into effect. Crotchstabsy feels slightly exhausted today. She has a (+2,1d6+3) shortsword and a 6-stack of daggers, though, so she can just go right on feeling exhausted. Considering Candle, I'm choosing Herbalism over Healing.
Barnabas has a mithril flail, a large shield, and an amulet of light, all of which I want. Unfortunately, he has no potion of invisibility. You can keep your stock for now, shopkeeper. I'll be waiting. First kill is an SMC kobold this game, since I have no ultra aspirations.
The first room in the SMC (after the one with the staircase) has a tension room, and I can't beat the contents back to the staircase. Killed by a white worm, of all things. Should have tried praying, or throwing daggers. Still probably an unavoidable death, though - there was what looked like an orc butcher in there.
Little offtopic but I'm gonna answer your question about swordsmen.
The normal swordsmen _can_ disarm, but only if you have quite low weapon skill. I'm not exactly sure how low nor if stats/level matter.
My latest "challenger" has actually made it to my first save. RNGDefier, the candle male orcish barbarian, has not yet been punished for his arrogant choice of name - in fact, he dominated the early game as his race/class usually does. Small cave, saved carpenter, couldn't find puppy's corpse (there were gel cubes, so maybe it can be dissolved? I know the damn thing's practically indestructible other than that), back through the UD to the HMV, courage quest obtained (though I managed to first-kill a mugger, so good luck with THAT), CoC, si obtained, dwarftown reached. I'm currently searching for a gnoll (there never is one when you need one...I cleared out two VAULTS of 'em in the UD) in the big room while slowly farming morgia, moss, stoma, and pepper petal. Unfortunately, I only have three herb patches (two stoma/pepper, one morgia/moss), and there's no spense or curaria. Frankly, I'd prefer the curaria - I munched three kobold shaman corpses in a row assuming some would show up, but I got six (!) roses off of doomed herbs with no curaria in sight.

RNGDefier has killed his gnoll, learned to read, and ID'ed his inventory, but not gotten rid of his sickness. He doesn't fancy either the animated forest or the dwarven halls sick, so he's farming herbs while he waits it out. Unfortunately, I have a sinking feeling that sickness duration stacks....
Any way to get rid of this bullshit short of actually finding the proper item? I've found a big spellbook shop that has a book of cure disease, but my chances of successfully reading it are akin to a Slovenian toad winning the California lottery.

You must have found a potion of healing by now. Bless it and drink. I think that blessed potions of healing have a 100% chance of curing sickness, and uncursed ones 50%.
