CTRL+K is the right combination. Then you can press any key to continue reading. If you want all the messages to whiz past, if there is lots and you dont care what they will be (for example surrounded by weak spiders or rats and their attacks are spammy, orrr waiting in spot to regenerate but you keep getting a certain tension) hit Return (the big enter button).

As for the weapons combination, certain conservative players will say "Spear plus shield" but actually all three combinations are very good in their own ways. Personally, I'd go with quarterstaff as my main choice, Big Punch as my second, and spear as the third choice.

Green hags are totally random. I'm sorry for you. They're not terribly rare, just terribly random.

I would say Big Punch + Shield. Since the staff is just 1 die, it's got a huge variance in damage. Big Punch is more reliable and with the shield offers far superior defense.
I said it before, and I'll say it again. If I knew scripture like you, I'd prolly be an athiest too.. -gut

Big Punch! Big Punch! Big Punch!

I would only ever use the staff with a role playing wizard, for cool points, if DF and crowning had been cruel.

edit: you could try to game the RNG and carry a huge amount of gold around whilst wearing a blessed girdle of greed - green hags will all of a sudden be hiding around every dungeon corner

Oh yes, I use greed girdles plenty of time. It's usually quite worth the risk, you're unlikely to die in this way.
    A) Green hags are fairly rare
    B) They can curse only in melee, so kill them at range
    C) They're weak so they'll invariably fall before they reach you
    D) They cant move a square and curse in the same turn, so if they reach you, just move
    E) Even if they reach you, they'll probably spend most turns attacking normally
    F) Even if they touch to curse, youd have to be DAMN unlucky to have your GIRDLE cursed, of all worn items.
    G) Finally, if you see a hag in range, you can drop your gold, and kill her in any way you wish.

The likeliness of you failing to go along at least ONE of these lines (and only one of any of these is enough), is truly minimal, close to zero. If the hag DOES appear out of nowhere, behind a corner, and touches your greed girdle while you're carrying crushworty amounts of gold, then RNG is REALLY out to get you, and you deserve to die A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PAINFUL DEATH OF UTTER AGONISING MISERY.

Or, in other words, you're blowing this "danger" way out of proportions.

To me his fault is the assumption that the RNG is a sentient entity that is actually determined to snuff the player's miserable life out in the most obscure way possible. We all know it's a perfectly unbiased piece of programming code. Right? Right?

Either way, the danger of using a girdle of greed seems to me to be the same as for girdles of carrying, only there's one more minor risk, and you lose more capacity if the thing is gone, while carrying shitloads of gold to fuel it? I mean, they can burn just girdles of carrying do, from acid traps and fire and what have you. It's still not very likely.

My approach is to limit the number of things that can cause me to die extremely stupid deaths. That includes being able to accidentally equip, unequip, or lose an item that is the only thing between my character and an instant death. I know I'll fuck it up, if not in this game, then in the next, so I don't take up the habit to begin with.

The real killer in the mid to late game isn't monsters, corruption, or unexpected obstacles of other kinds. It's my own stupidity. Managing insane amounts of inventory using spells or equipment just adds one more thing to be stupid about.

EDIT: Post 2222? What am I doing with my life?

ADOM Guides - whatever you wanted to know about playing a certain class, but have been afraid to ask!

Check out my youtube channel to see my ADOM videos, including a completed playthrough of the game. I try to give instructions, so if you want to see some place you haven't been before and get some hints on how to deal with it, this might help! There's also some other games featured there that you might find interesting.

I've always felt the risk with girdles of greed was that girdles are easily destroyed by random fireball, acid, or door traps, among other things. Green hag problem is much rarer.
Hoping to win with every class, doomed. Archer, Barbarian, Bard, Beastfighter, Druid, Elementalist, Farmer, Fighter, Monk, and ULE Priest down.

When your girdle of greed gets destroyed through item destruction, you get ONE TURN to either reequip another girdle or to drop the excess weight before being crushed. A number of my characters have survived an otherwise certain death in this way. However, when the girdle is cursed, you dont get that one turn to fix it. You get crushed instantly. I thought that this was known? I remember talking to Grey about this years ago.

It's probably "known". Just not known by idiots like JellySlayer and I who don't bother getting billions of gold from the casino.
